TV wouldn't stay converged them went black

My TV just started to lose its convergence so I converged it. I had to do this twice in about a 10 min timeframe. It then went completely black. I decided to change the convergence amplifiers, but the TV is still black. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

I really can't check the resistors now. My ohmsmeter is not working. Any other ideas?

  • bama24mp Oct 06, 2007

If you would recomend changing resistors, are those the only two?

  • bama24mp Oct 07, 2007

I just bought one online and will have it in a few days. I will be able to test then. Maybe we can get this fixed. Thanks again.

What about R846?  No resistance is showing through it.  R847 is ok and I can't find R841.  I checked the continuity of the fuses and all seemed ok.

  • bama24mp Oct 10, 2007

I checked almost every resistor and fuse i could find and all are good.  Even R846 (bad battery in DMM gave me a false reading).. Any other ideas?

Sorry didn't get back just want to check in with you. Found also R847, R841 may need changing.

  • Lashawn Robinson Oct 07, 2007

You really need that meter to check these resistors. They maybe acting as fuses, which is your problem. There are fuses that blows that cause problems when replacing converg. amps, if you have no solder bridges.

Yes, just let me know of any changes!

It would be great to assist you in Sony convergence issue.
As you said, for some time TV shows bad convergence in picture that shows its matter of lose/ dry solder joints in D board, specially on convergence out ICs pins that need to be re-solder.
There are 2 big black ICs mounted on aluminum heat sink on D Board of TV, below image shows D Board location in TV.
Resolder pins of these 2 ICs and also check any other dry/ cold solder joints in circuit board. I do not think of IC replacement as problem occurs some time.
Let me know if you have additional question.

52' take about 15 min. to come then only stay on for about 1hr

The convergence ICs overheat , you get bad picture and then the TV detects the fault and go in protection mode, that is the standby state.

That means that the convergence ICs are bad and must be replaced, the job is about $200/$300.

3 blinks means the convergence circuits are shutting the set down. Usually the convergence ICs will take care of the problem, but I would recommend getting the service manual from the following link, as they will provide you free support to help you diagnose why it wont start as usually the convergence ICs wont prevent a set from powering up, unless another component in the convergence circuit has failed.

Tv went black and no sound standby light falsh twice and paused and flashed twice again

This indicates a short happened somewhere in the set, causing the set to go into "safe mode" where it won't let itself turn on. Oftentimes it's the convergence board. Depending on what that will cost you, you may want to just replace the set.
