Question about Intel Motherboard

1 Answer

Boot/wake-up HP Pavilion a230n will not power up unless I unplug the power cable from the motherboard, hold in the power button and replug in the power cable to the motherboard. Also PC will go into standby (sleep) but will not come out of standby (wake). Windows XP updates are current and BIOS has been updated. Tried all fixes on HP Cust. Service site and PC Doctor indicates that everything is OK...everything passes.

Re: Boot/wake-up

Dear Nikodi

The power supply may be paying tricks on you. Consider changing it. You can also test with another one before you switch them. It's usually the culprit in this scenario; getting ready to die..

For the standby problem, set everything in BIOS to default. If you don't know how, get someone to reset BIOS for you to DEFAULT. This runs without hibernating and restarts at the touch of a key or mouse.

Good luck

Before you go and get a new motherboard, first let's try to do a hard reset.

Sometimes, hp and Compaq computers bios will lock up, causing this condition.

To do the hard reset, first make sure all the cords are connected to the points where they belong.

Now, unplug your ethernet cable, and your power cord.

This stops all power from coming into the machine.

Next, press and hold the power button in for 30 to 45 seconds.

This causes the capacitors on the motherboard, and the ones in the power supply to dissipate, and returns them to a ready state.

After doing that, reconnect just the power cord and attempt to power on the computer.
If it boots, then it was the bios glitch, if not, then you have a faulty motherboard, that or you have a device installed the wrong way, so that when the system boots up, it calls for the power to that device in an unusual way, then the system will shut down to prevent damage.

If it does boot up, then you can reconnect the ethernet cable back, otherwise there is no sense of hooking it back up as you would be replacing the motherboard anyways.

I hope you have good luck with this, and have a good day.

Hi Dan. I wish I got paid for this advice, but here it is anyways, LOL.

First, take any discs you have out if possible.
Next, unplug the computer.
Next, hold the power button in for at LEAST 45 seconds, this should allow the bios to un-freeze itself. This happens wuite often on HP/Compaq computers.
Doing this procedure is known as a soft reset.
Then, replug the computer back in, and attempt to boot it up, if it worked, then you should be good to go!
When you do this, it places your bios back to working like factory fresh.
This is very handy, as it can save alot in un-needed repairs sometimes.
It's possible that the repair guy was right, but I would almost bet that this gets it going again.
If it was the motherboard that had really died, then you wouldn't have even got the splash screen with the HP logo.

So, try this, and good luck !

Please try the folowing

1) Remove ALL wires and then press and hold the power button in for approx 20 seconds

2) Plug everything back in and then rerty

This may sort the issue out however from what you are descrbing, if there is no boot or display it is highly likely the motherboard and/or the CPU is faulty

Hi I have a HP pavilion a708uk pc when i power up the cpu fan run full speed the the screen says "hibernating" then shuts down! any ideas?

You can try the following steps to resolve this issue:
Turn off the computer
Remove the power cable
Press the power button and hold it for atleast 8 seconds
Reconnect the power cable
Try to restart the computer and see if you are able to get on to the Desktop.
If the above steps does not work and you again get the "hibernate" screen, immediately press the "Esc"(escape) key on your keyboard. It should let you go to Desktop.

Once you are able to boot normally do the following:
Right click on Desktop
Click properties
Go to Screensaver Tab
Click on Power button
On the Power Options Properties Window, click on "hibernate" Tab
Uncheck "unable hibernate"
Press OK

Hope you find the above information helpful.

Please do not forget to leave your feedback and ratings.

Thank you for choosing Fixya.

I would say to try resetting the laptop. You have to first remove the battery then the power. Finally hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Try it again. If that doesn't work let me know if you just added anything to it.

Hp paviilion will not power up

try removing the battery and switch on your notebook using the ac adapter only if it works then i think you need a replacement for the battery or you can try to power cycle your notebook i hope it applies to hp notebooks coz it works all the time with dell vostro. to power cycle: unplug/remove ac adapter, battery, usb devices (mp3, ipod, printers, etc) optical drive, network cable then press and hold the power button not less than 10 seconds then put everything back except for the usb devices and network cable if it works then you can plug everything back again.

1. Full power down. Unplug the power cord from the Power supply. Then hold down the pc power button.
Try to boot the pc.

2. Open the case and reseat the graphics card, hard drive, and RAM.

3. Take out one of the RAM sticks if there is 2 or more. Swap the RAM sticks in different RAM slots.

4. Set the Cmos jumper to clear. Power up the pc. Power down the PC. Set the Cmos jumper back to normal position, power up the PC.

5. Unplug and replug all the power supply cables.

6. Check the powersupply function. Either by a powersupply voltage checker, put the powersupply in a different pc, or try a different powersupply in the problem computer.

Could be bad ram, motherboard, cpu, powersupply, videocard.

Won't boot

unplug the power cable (black thing on back) and replug it in after about 20 seconds. make sure the power switch on the back of your pc is flipped to the on position. when you turn your pc on, if the motherboard is getting power, there should be a green light that comes on on the board.

No boot or wake up

Chances are you need to change the power supply,, but first you need to check to see if its workingm this is quite easy

1.) unplug it
2.) remove the power connector from the main board
3.) on the power connector is a green wire(ONLY ONE) and right next to it is a blact wire(any black will work)
4.) use a peper clip or unisulated wire to bridge the green and black wire by inserting it into the jack contacts.
5.) plug in the power supply, if the fans spins then its working..

If the power supply is fine then you will need to check the power button connectors *wire from power button that connects to the main board),, if the connection is fine, then unjack the connectors and use a bladed screwdriver to bridge the pins for the power button connector on the main board,it should boot up. If not then you need to have that mainboard replaced
