this morning my fridgidaire frs26r4aw5 made a really loud noise coming from the freezer (I think) then I realized that my food was starting to thaw. I removed the food from the freezer and you could hear the fan come back on but it goes off again. Also at the same time the water dispenser stopped working. What could be going on.

I have the same problem. My GE tfx20jr is working fine on the freezer side but stays around 60F on the fridge side. I recently purchased it new from a very nice older couple who said it was working fine. They were using it, actually. I have played with moving the temp controls to no avail. It also is veeerrryyy slow to make ice. I have checked the water flow to the unit to make sure it is sufficient. I was wondering how important the levelness was. It looks to be a little unlevel. I can fix that easily just wondering if it could be a factor.

I was having the same problem and found that the drain hole on the freezer side at the bottom was clogged. When the condensation drips it should drain through that hole. Since it is clogged the water builds up and leaks out the side of the refrigerator. Here is how to fix it:
1. Check to make sure you see the hole and that it is clogged. You will know it is clogged if water simply sits on top of the hole and doesn't drain through it.
2. Unplug the refrigerator and get a flashlight - I used the little cute one on my key chail :-)
3. Go to the back at the bottom right and remove the vent cover. It is just a few screws.
4.On the right you will see a plastic pipe that connects to the rain drain inside the freezer.
4. Simply disconnect the pipe and remove it. The pipe is bendable so do be afraid to bend it if you need to in order to remove it.
5. Clean out the pipe with hot water. You will need to tap it in the sink to make sure all the "gook" is coming out. I boiled hot water and poured it through the pipe until the water flowed through both ends completely.
5. Re attach the pipe and screw the vent back on.
You have solved the problem!

I bought this refrigerator new in 1998 and it has been a great investment. This is the only problem I've ever had. I'm happy this was an easy fix.
It took me more time to find a fix on the internet than it did to actually fix it. So that's why I'm sharing the solution with you. I hope this is helpful!

Will need a little more info on this one. Such as: No cool in both freezer and fridge section? Do you hear anything running, fans or compressor? If it is cold in freezer check to see if there is frost build up on back panel in freezer. Let me know so we can solve this problem.

I am having this problem with my GE TFX20JR. I can hear fans running and cool air is coming out of the back instead of warm. Not freezing and barely cooling in fridge section. Any helpful hints or fixes would be great! Thanks!

My GE 19.7 TFX20JR only partially freezes in certain areas and not cold on refrigerator side. This all happened at the same time it stopped making ice. Water still dispenses.

Check for frozen, iced over evaporator coil caused by defective defrost timer and/or heating element. Ice maker will not work unless freezer temp is around 10 degrees or less.

I have a GE Side-By-Side Refrigerator Model # TFX20JR . The refrigerator handle is loose and needs tightened and I can't find anything in my manual telling me how to do it. Your help would be greatly...

you must remove the inner panel to get to the handle screws on most ge 's . use red lock tight on threads to prevent it from doing it again . mm

Not cooling properly GE TFX20JR

Your refrigerator has a defrost thermostat inside the fresh food section behind the light cover and control panel. Need you to turn it clockwise slowly until the compressor stops. Leave it like that and after 30 minutes or less it does not restart you will need to replace the timer. The defrost timer is part number WR9X489
You should hear sounds from freezer with door open like sizzling or crackling. That would be the defrost working. If there is no defrost during this time. let me know so we can look into the defrost element and defrost thermostat as possible problems. Visit my site and enter the model or part number into search feature. That takes you to your model. Any questions or help from me, just let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

GE TFX20JR BK WW side by side won't cool or freeze

First point: The entire fridge is cooled by the freezer section. A fan blows air across to the food section.
2) Every 8 hours or so, a timer shuts off the compressor cycle, and starts up a heater to defrost the freezer coils. If the heater(s) are burnt out, or if the safety thermostat (to prevent overheating) is open, then you will have no defrost. The coils will frost up and eventually prevent airflow to the food section. Milk goes sour.
3) In rare circumstances, the timer itself can stall. This cause the same symptoms as above, but this is not as common as the other 2 causes of No Defrost.
Sequence: Check heater continuity. Check safety thermostat continuity while cold. Check defrost timer operation.
Hope this helps. I am a journeyman with 39 years exp. Happy New Year.

More likely, the defrost system has failed.
There are three components: Defrost timer, a defrost heater, and a defrost bi-metal.
The timer can be located either in the food compartment, on the rear of the unit, or behind the kickplate. The heater and bi-metal are located behind the freezer rear wall (or freezer floor, depending on design). It's easiest to unplug the fridge overnight, with the freezer door open, to melt all the ice that has developed. PRIOR to doing all this, please ensure that there IS ice forming on the wall of floor of the freezer! Let me know. I hope this helps!
