Question about Nikon COOLPIX S200 Digital Camera

Fill flash/ flash setting for backlit

I live/work in Samoa, S. Pacific where the sun is VERY bright and most subjects are contrasty and backlit. I have a new Coolpix s200 and am frustrated that when I set the flash to the backlit setting no flash is fired. I have an example photo but don't see a way of sending an attachment and I can't find an online customer support from Nikon. Could someone provide me with suggestions about getting a fill flash function to work and a online contact for Nikon customer support....just in case this function is actually bronken. I cannot dial tool free from this country to the US and I cannot afford an overseas cass from the S. Pacific. Thanks ahead of time. RPMS

Its ok use flash in morning??

Yes, particularly if the subject is back lit (sun or brightest areas are behind the subject). The flash will help fill (lighten the shadows) and balance the exposure. Use fill flash setting if your camera has it.

Just hit the flash mode button until the get the lightning bolt symbol meaning constant flash. I use this all the time on the same camera for a backlit subject when I need a fill flash

AF area mode problem

To answer your flash question...the Nikon flash system fires the flash when the camera thinks the picture will be too contrasty without the flash. You can Google for "fill flash" to learn more. This is usually beneficial; if not, holding the flash button and turning the main dial will cycle through flash options on the top screen.

Why is a picture too dark?

The cause and solution may include one of the following: The flash is not on. Turn on the flash. The subject is too far away for the flash to have an effect. Move so that the distance between you and the subject is within the effective flash range. The subject is in front of a bright light (backlit). Use Fill flash. There is not enough light. Increase Exposure Compensation.
