Sadly, it sounds like a power supply in the set has failed. I can think of no other possible "user solution" remedies here...
Sometimes there are capacitors in the power supplies that 'bulge', due to heat (or inferior part quality), and these can be replaced inexpensively. If you feel so inclined, and use extreme caution (unplug set for at least 12 hours first), you can take a look. Search with Google images for "bad caps" to get plenty of examples what you would be looking for.
One thing to keep in mind about rear projection sets... the projection arc lamps do NOT take kindly to being "short-cycled"... in other words, turning it ON, lamp ignites, starts to put out light... then gets turned OFF. This can cause catastrophic failure on these lamps in short order.
