Sounds like you may have the numeric overlay turned on. To turn it off hold down the FN key and press F11.

Can i upgrade windows7 in IBM t40

this is an old model. if your actual specification actually meets Win 7, it may work, however, the challenge would be with the drivers. You can go to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support and select your correct T40 edition to confirm the availability of the system drivers that you need after making sure your actual specification like process speed, amount of memory available, video controller and disk space are all met.

IBM T-40 issues

When you download the T40 device drivers, they need to be the XP versions.
When you run the driver programs they will be unzipped/expanded to the hard drive in a folder c:\drivers. Then you need to open the various folders and run the setup programs to install the various drivers.
NOTE - The T40 series laptops come with various different manufacturers devices (eg. there are a few different wireless model LANs) and if one version driver doesn't work you need to install a different one. It is a bit of trial and error to find the right one.

Problem installing adapters

You are in a catch 22 situation, because you need to download a driver from IBM, Unfortunately the lack of driver is stopping you from going on line. The 2 options you have are to either find the driver disk that came with the computer, or to download the driver on another computer and transfer it to yours. A USB thumb drive works great for the transfer.

IBM ThinkPad T40

You don't say what OS you run, but have you tried reinstalling your audio files? This will probably fix your problem.
If you run Windows XP, 2000 or 98SE, this link will download the correct drivers :

Shutting off

There are many things to cause this problem. It is a little bit tricky to find out what is causig the problem. Suggestion-1. If you can arrange spare HDD compatible with your laptop, connect it and install Windows. if this goes smooth..then replace the original HDD. Suggestion-2. If the above method repeats the problem. you should take the motherboard out and clean it with IPA [Iso propyle alcohol] solution. and fix it back this should solve your problem. Note: The second suggestion applies only if your laptop is out of warranty. Otherwise cotact your system vendor.
