Hi there,

I'm the maintenance guy for an apartment complex and we have run into some problems with some dws, for some reason, no matter what kind of soap they use and no matter how clean everithing is inside, after the cycle the dishes end up with a kind of white film soap residue like and I cannot figure out why...
Can any one help me?>

-   I will try using the salt treatment but my dishwasher leaves soap scum on everything!  Is there a filter other then the one on the bottom that needs to be cleaned out?  How do you clean the spinning water spouts?  Some of the holes were clogged because of the soap build up.  By the way, I have a full house water filter so I don't get the build up.  Is it because I don't have a water softner?-   oyako

-   New Frigidaire (2 months old) takes longer to run, uses more energy, and does a much poorer job of cleaning dishes than the 20 year old GE it replaced. Worst problem is the greasy white residue on glass bowls and nonstick pans. I'm now hand-washing half of the items AFTER the dishwasher has run.

I've switched from liquid to powder detergents, keep the Jet-Dry compartment filled, use Sanitize or HiTemp cycle to make sure the water is hot enough to dissolve the soap, I've changed and changed again the way I arrange the dishes in the machine. I've run the hot water before starting the machine. I don't understand the need for "salt" if you don't have hard water, but if someone can tell me why I'll try anything.

white film generally shows that there is not enough salt in the dishwasher, this is not normal salt like on your meal, you buy this from the detergent section of the store, add salt through the part where it says "S" unscrew the cap and put about 2 cups of it in, while filling with salt water will overflow out of the same place, this is normal

this will start to work after about a wash or so

if the salt is fine then check the heater on the machine, make sure its warming up etc

if i have helped please rate me

- you put salt in like you put wash powder in it, maybe less often, you do need it to run properly

use salt all the time, its not expensive

check the manual there is always a place for salt to go, it may differ for other models and machines, you just have to look, it does go somewhere trust me keep looking

jet dry is not the solution in your case, salt is the only answer

The problem is hard water. Need to use the high temperature wash setting and I've found that putting vinegar in tub after cycle starts helps a lot. Also can use vinegar with dish soap to get film off dishes after the fact. In fact, stemware should be given vinegar therapy by hand washing or the film may become permanent!

A water softener can be installed on the water line, but I've found that a quality dishwasher with hot enough water will NOT have a problem hard water or not. May be time for a new dishwasher and definitely need to have a hi temp option.
