It's the manufacturer's intention that the user not remove the cover. For most purposes, cleaning can be done via the threading area. I have seen a machine that an inexperienced person tried to self-service the machine and the cover and several pieces were broken and damaged.
I do not have a Brother machine but have been able to remove the base to oil the mechanical parts on my mechanical serger. The area was never dirty but the oil definitely made a difference.
Be sure that your needles aren't bent, be wary of bending the arm because they do have a slight curve to them and if you mess it up it could cost you. Try the new needles first and make sure that they are inserted all of the way up.
check to make sure it is not wraping around the upper looper. just stitch without the material and you will see it. but then you must rethread the upper looper and the lower looper again in the right order. hope this helps
