Question about Canon CanoScan LiDE 500F Flatbed Scanner

Locker My scanner isn't working anymore; Scangear cs does not communicate with the scanner saying that it is locked, while the scanner is unlocked; I disconnected and reconnected it several times (and the reading head does not move a little bit as it used to do at every turning on of the computer); I reaffirm that despite the error message, it is really unlocked.

    A message pops up saying its locked, when it isn't. I almost got it going, except it doesn't scan one edge, or if it does, it is all jiggley and impossible to read. That happens for the first 3/4" inch of the page, down the left hand side. Need help.

    I have exactlly the same problem! It tells me the slide lock needs to be unlocked and the USB cable unplugged and replugged. At the same time it tells me that there's a TWAIN error and it might not be plugged in at all. I've done all it told me to do a dozen times, and I've tried a different USB cable in case mine's dead. Nothing makes any difference.

    I notice that when I turn my PC on, there's no sound from the scanner - normally it makes a noise which I presume is the carriage return moving. I don't know what's wrong, but if the machine itself is faulty, is it worth trying to get it repaired, or cheaper just to get a new one?

    I have the same problem. My PC detect Canon Lide 500f but unable to communicate with scanner when I try to scan. Message saying scanner is lock even if isn't lock !!!!

    Tried it on multiple computer, same error message... probably means its dead!

    My computer and scanner does not comunicate. The message "relese lock switch and detach the I/F cable and reconnect comes up. My Scanner is unlocked and even if I recconnect the same error comes up.

    I had the same problem with my CanoScan N670U. I tried everything, reconnected, reinstalled the software, restarted my computer, went through the manual, canon's website, the troubleshooting .... over and over. Nothing worked.

    Eventually I got so frustrated that I hit the scanner with my hand on the area where the lock is located. Well.... problem solved. Suddenly it is working again. I guess it kept falsely registering the lock to be on though it wasn't and by hitting it, I helped it to register that it actually is unlocked.

    (The real funny thing is I fixed my camera the same way and it’s been working great again for many years)

    I have the same problem - it says it's locked when it isnt. I followed someone's advice about giving it a whack to try and make it unlock but instead i've broken it even more so be careful out there!

Had same problem with the 'release the lock switch' garbage. Didn't know where the faaaark the sodding release switch was anyway but gave the scanner a good whack on each of the front corners.....problem fixed.

I went to the Canon Download Website and downloaded their 'Twain' software. It is now working again. Try it and see if it works.

Canon ScanGear CS driver error Code: 2,252,0 - Can't preview Actually I have the Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 Flatbed Scanner - but this wasn't presented as an option, so I thought I'd try the nearest...


Canon ScanGear CS driver error Code: 2,252,0. Error when trying to Preview scan using ScanGear in your program, e.g. Word, PhotoShop...

I had the same problem, Canon Technical were clueless on this error code. Yes the problem occured when trying to preview first however I could scan but without any preview, pointless really.

I have fixed it for Windows Xp SP3, Canon Lide 80. To Fix:

You need to download the latest ScanGear driver and Deldrv.exe from the canon website. You don't need the Toolbox,

It would help if you have Tuneup 2009 (even Trail version) for the later parts of this fix: just click download, you don't need to give them your email address.

1. Save these on C:
2. Remove the USB cable from your scanner - make sure it is unplugged.
3. Run Deldrv.exe, select your scanner and uninstall.

4. Now you will need to go into 'C:/WINDOWS/TWAIN_32' folder; you must remove anything in this folder - safest thing to do is CUT any items and paste them on the C: or personal folder.

5. Now the register parts - you need to purge your registry of any left over values. I found out after several attempts that this final step fixed the problem for me.

Basically through Windows XP Regedit or TuneUp Reg Editor search the ENTIRE registry for first 'ScanGear', second, 'Canon' and third if you have installed previously, 'Canon Toolbox'. Find any entries relating to any Canon scanner software and delete them. I only found around 6 or 7 entries to remove.

6. If you have TuneUp run '1-Click maintence' (correct problems) and afterwards run the 'Register defragger'. Restart.

7. On the next bootup your register should be optimised. Ok, disable any Anti-virus software.

8. Run the scangear setup winzip file you saved on C:. * it will extract a folder to C:. If get an error with the extraction, try running it anywhere else except C drive. Alternatively if you have WinRar, right click and manual extract contents. The scangear setup winzip file/folder (called lide80vst7250a_xpen) only contained a readme and setupSG.exe.

9. You must run the setupSG inside this folder. And you're done. Enable your anti-virus.

9. Now connect USB to scanner, Windows should pick it up. Open Word or PhotoShop > run the scangear program to preview.

10. Done! It worked my end.

I was able to install the CanoScan Toolbox by doing the following: MacIntosh HD --> Library --> CFMSupport --> Get Info. Under 'Sharing & Permissions', I added my name & changed 'Read only' to 'Read & Write' .

Problem now: I can't install the LIDE 30 Scanner Driver. I clicked on the downloaded driver & a box opened. I clicked on ScanGear CS Installer, but that didn't work. I then clicked on 'Into Plug-In' --> ScanGear CS 7.0X --> Choose Application --> CanoScan Toolbox 4.1 --> Plug-Ins, but couldn't continue as the 'Open' tab was greyed out. What should I try? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Canon mp610 scanning problem

The readme says that some USB hubs have an issue.

I was having problems and was connected via a hub. I removed the hub and connected the printer directly to the back of the PC and voila scanning is all good.

Scanner won't communicate with my Mac

Uninstall the software with scanner unplug from your MAC. Install the software with the scanner disconnected, then connect it b4 the first use of the software.
