Question about Toshiba Portege S100-S1133 Notebook
Hi, I have a Toshiba Portege R500 notebook. It had win Vista installed on it earlier. Now i want to install XP on it. But ,installation halts after showing blue screen after some time. What is the cause of the problem? Is there anything specific about installing XP on Toshiba Portege R500 Notebook. Any suggestion would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance Saket
Guys, if you have the genuine XP CD, please download the Storage Driver from Intel and slipstream it into your version of XP CD. You can also slipstream Service Packs into it as well.
Personally I hate Vista so much. It really brings out the angry devil in me.
By the way, the best and easiest way to slipstream is to install and use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/
Let me know if you want help on installing XP on R500 (I build it a few days ago, but regret to update the BIOS to version 1.06 as I lost the Ctrl key on it).
To get to the BIOS, press and hold the Esc key then Power button.

You must install the Intel Storage Manager drivers during XP Setup with the "F6" function. Also...YOU MUST HAVE AN EXTERNAL FLOPPY DISK...as XP does not support CD ROM or USB for this function. PS. XP doesn't read folders either...so you will need to have all setup files in the Root of the A: Drive

Change the HDD to compatibility mode... or get the intel matrix driver and use the f6floppy directory and readme to install the driver by pressing f6 at xp startup. You will need an external floppy disk tho.

The Toshiba Portege R500 has 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 ultra-low voltage processor with 1.20GHz clock speed, 2MB L2 cache, and 533MHz front-side bus. This laptop is based on Mobile Intel 945GMS Express chipset with the integrated GMA 950 The R500 comes with Windows Vista Business 32-bit (Portege R500-S5002 model) or Windows XP Professional (R500-S5001X model) So as I think there may be some compatibility issue. your laptop model may be designed for Vista. There are plenty of workarounds you can find from the internet. I have one suggestion... Go to BIOS setup. (Press the relevant key ...may be F11 or F12 or something like that) Find something that is similar to " BIOS setup defaults" (sometimes it id reffered to as "safe settings"). Save the changes and restart. Now try installing Windows XP. Hope this will do some help.

A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

ok my friend its not that easy but its always possible
fisrt just to know why u r unable to install xp because u have the HARD DISK SATA
and windows xp wont detect it because there are no definitions for SATA HDD.
so what should we do to fix this problem, you will know that by following these steps:
at the begining you need a floppy disk and floppy disk drive (i know thats not available in the new laptops, so u might need to buy one).
ok now we will need to download the SATA definitions from here:
and save it in the floppy disk (dont forget to unzip the file first).
now lets start the windows installation process (as usual).
u before you get to load the windows file there will be a prompt (in the buttom of the screen) asking you (press F6 if u need to install a third party...........) now press F6 quickly.
you will have a new screen with three options (S= specify, enter= continue or F3= exit).
now lets press S.
you will have a prompt asking you to (insert the labeled disk manufacturer ................).
lets insert the floppy disk now. and press enter
and when its asking you to select definition, select RAID driver.
and when its asking you about windows logo testing press yes.
and after finishing the definition process it will detect the HDD.
now continue installing windows as usual
enjoy XP (i know its a long story but its worth it :)
sure let me know what happened with u and for any other problems plz let me know

Toshiba Factory Reset
a couple of ways to do that 1) if you have the recovery CDs supplied with the PC - then you can use these - put the CD into the drive and when it boots follow the instructions 2) If you have a recovery partition on the laptop - have a read here to see if you have one http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/outFrm.jsp?ofId=AskIris&searchString=recovery+to+factory 3) This link shows you how to use the partition http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?soid=2291088&pf=true basically as the PC boots TAP F8 key - from the menu that appears choose "repair your computer"
If that option is NOT available then you will need to Order CDs from Toshiba - http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Recovery-media/m-p/9148#U9148
