There are no extra slots on the door hinge itself. The top end of the spring unit is visible/accessible through a circular cutout on each side of the unit. The top end has a bracket welded to the frame. The spring looks to have a plastic sleeve through which a plastc piece (shaped like a philips screwdriver) protrudes when the door is closed. Perhaps somebody has seen this before?

After all the phases of the cycle were over there was a continuous quiet noise that sounded like a motor running. The only way to get it to stop is to keep the door open. If I close the door the motor sound comes back on. If I start the washing cycle the loud motor comes on and I can still hear the quieter motor running in the background.
