Network Conflict issues

I have just started work with a real estate company that has a pretty messy LAN. Their internet is coming out of a linksys router into a few Farallon PN520/16-1 Switches. There are about 35 computers directly pluged into these for the internet sharing. People often are disconnected due to IP conflicts and unable to access the internet & server. The switches are flashing the lights at me to let me know their are conflicts but I did not set these up, do not have a manual, and they seem to be invisible to my port scanner (ip-less). What can I do to access these and solve the problem? I'm not going to every computer and setting the IP for a few reasons.

- Sorry I didn't mention how DHCP is handled. It is currently set up to be assigned from the linksys router (the same router that the internet is coming from).

Would it be necessary to change from the linksys to the server?

p.s. I have recommended to my boss to let the server everyone is accessing to assign the IP's since they are logging in to the server anyways.

Clarification Request

It sounds like DHCP might already be running on the server, making a total of 2 devices trying to assign IP addresses. Turn off DHCP in the Linksys and follow RPFinney's suggestions.

Hi,
Do you have Active Directory ?

I would Automate it all.

Install a D.H.C.P. Server services
on the Domain Controller

have Auto I.P. Address assignmet

You wouldn't have conflicts then

Richard

Hi,

So your basically connected straight to the internet,

This is your connection problem already, too many systems...

use the router as a gateway only, not for D.H.C.P.

all systems should be behind a router, especially the servers, these should be well away from the net, at least behind a firewalled router,

Promote the server to Domain Controller
install D.H.C.P. on it

If you have file servers thats ok, just connect them to the network.

( you will have to go round all PCs to change to AUTO D.H.C.P )
This is a saturday job for you when no one is working.

let the server handle D.H.C.P.
thats what it is for, exactly for your problem you have,
of a Growing LAN, yes 10-15 PCs is ok
but now 35, possible going upto 40-50, needs Automating.

Hope this helps

Richard.

- Hi,

Bit of advice for you pal...if you don't mind me giving it...
give yourself plenty time for teething problems, you will have a couple of issues to sort.

Be prepared to work overtime, to resolve the problems you will face.
Run round for an hour or two, but be methodical.

Write every single step you are going to do, in a plan of action. then act upon it.

Job will be sorted, when your setup correctly..

Keep it as simple as possible, nothing complex, it has to be nice and simple,
Easier to look after and manage that way in the future for you.

If this is going to be your future network to look after,
you need it simple and easy. no confusion then.

Good luck have fun....

All the best

Regards
Richard.
