When I start to record I have no image either in the view finder or the viewing screen, but then E:61:00 flashes on the upper right of the viewing screen and I can view the image in front of the camera, but only on the screen, not the view finder. Is this something a Sony rep will have to fix??

Re: Error code E:61:00
Yes it's a sony repair job, but theres a lot of people who have resorted to the following methods before they will part with $200 or so, the camera models are different but the method is the same :-

You have not given enough information. Are you trying to see recorded photos or expecting to see the image from the lens? You normally have an option to either use the view finder OR the LCD display. It usually defaults to the view finder and you must activate the LCD with a button.
Look in the view finder when recording instead of the screen. if you see the image there then the unit is probably set to look through there. Many of the new units dont' have a full view finder to lens item they actually have a small lcd screen inside the view finder. Check your options for recording.
Also if the view finder is tilted you need to close that before usign the lcd.
The image will not appear simultaneously on the LCD
monitor and the viewfinder. It will appear in the
viewfinder when the LCD monitor is in the lock position,
and it will appear on the LCD monitor when fully
Hi, I'm Sony tech and can help you to solve problem of CCD-TR818 camcorder. Tap bottom of camcorder few times with your palm gently, now check playback of tape. If problem still not solved, let me know what error code flashing on top right of view finder screen. Thanks.
If camcorder shows old recorded tapes picture with correct colors in LCD but does not show live view in camera mode to record new movie then its ccd imager chip failure.
And if camcoder shows live view and old recorded tapes in its eye piece view finder but does not show any thing in LCD the its problem of broekn/ cracked flexible wire between lcd board and main board of camcorder.
Let me know your finding with bit detail to provide you solution/ helpful info.
I HAD THIS PROBLEM ERROR CODE C31 : 22 WOULD COME UP AND TRV 118 CAM WOULD NOT WORK. I TRIED EVERYTHING TILL ONE DAY I BANGED IT ON A CARPETED FLOOR ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CAMCORDER 5 TIMES QUITE HARD. THEN THE CAM WORKED JUST FINE! MY CAM HADN'T WORKED FOR OVER 7 MONTHS. NOW I HAVE IT BACK. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.
you need to go to the service center for replacing the
ccd image sensor...i know it is free for replacing that image sensor cause your camera is one of the recall product due to the production error of the image sensor...log on to the sony site and go the costumer service ...
at the back of the camera next to the view finder (bottom right hand corner) is a button and icon marked SEL.
pressing this button toggles the lens image from the view finder to the lcd screen and back again.
IF neither view is available then I suspect your camera needs some TLC at a repair shop.
hope this helps.
You have images on the Card- Yes?
The flash works -Yes?
Now you cannot take pic's is that what you mean.
One of many thing- are you getting error messages?
Are you sure you are getting images to the card?
There may be images on the card but the screen has gone down- If you hold the camera at a slight angle can you see dim images[if yes screen back light down]
If No images a connector or CCD problem.
Make sure you have fresh batteries
Gently squeeze the casing near the bottom of the screen- it may be a loose connector.
Depending on how long you have had this -get onto the Seller or Manufacturer's web site tech support- there may be a replacement available.
There will almost certainly be no repair option on this type of camera
