I have just re-installed windows XP home edition, now I have the same problem - my 1394 net adaptor is showing as IP unavailable. I am connected using telewest cable modem and belkin router. I can connect to the internet with my other computer. I've tried sticking in all the driver disks that came the the PC but nothing. I also tried to deinstall from device manager the IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller and restarted the PC. But still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Riz

    To answer questions from idiskosmos....

    - router is one supplied by Virgin cable

    - OS is Windows XP home edition

    - modem has a steady light and is working fine on my other laptop

    - ipconfig shows nothing. It just says Windows IP configuration with no numbers

I had this same problem, you need to buy a new Ethernet Card

In order to troubleshoot this problem, I need the following information:

Are you using a router?
What OS do you have?
Does your modem have a steady "online" light?
What IP address is coming up in ipconfig?

Cant connect laptop to cable modem

OK based on the IP address you've given me I can tell that your network card is not getting an IP from the cable modem. The IP you have there is automatically assigned by windows in the absence of a proper DHCP server.

You have 2 options now you can try to manually assign the IP address and connect to the modem or if u have the CD that came with it you can connect to it using a USB connection (most modems have a usb port) and configure the modem manually to give you an IP or at least see what address range it is using and configure your PC to suit.

If you don't have the CD and USB and you want to manually assign an IP address to your PC most modems tend to use 1 of 3 address, you can try either:
to connect to the modem (if you use a ping command from the command prompt with any of the above addresses the one that replies is the ip of ur modem)

and manually configure your PC network card with either

Its a little technical i know but you should be able to do it
Hope this helps you.

If this doesn't work we can try a "tracert" command next to see if we can determine the modem IP

My router wont configure

Plug in the laptop to the router and the router to the modem. Power cycle the modem. Turn on power to the router. Copen a command prompt on the laptop and type 'ipconfig /all' and press Enter. Look for your IP address (should have been assigned by the router and should look like 192.168.1.x). Also look for the default gateway. It will probably be If that is the case, you should be able to use your web browser to connect to the router to check its configuration and the WAN status by typing in the address '' (or whatever was displayed for the default gateway previously.

Trying to set up wireless router to satellite phone/internet

i've never worked with a 7740, but i've installed hundreds of hn7000's and hn9000's. the issue is usually that the router and modem are defaulting to the same ip address. if your router supports has a web-based config utility (as most do) try cat-5'ing to the router with your computer while the router is NOT connected to the modem. log into the router and set it's ip address to something OTHER THAN (i use for my customers) reboot the router and reconnect it to the modem. the ip conflict should now be resolved.

If it is, try this:

* Turn off the modem - make sure its powered off completely
* Wait 30 seconds
* Turn modem on, wait for the lights to become solid (Cable or Online LED should be solid)
* Start the PC

Dell latitude d800 laptop

The problem may be the modem has to assign an IP address to your laptop, what you may have to do is plug the laptop into the modem and see if the laptop recognizes the modem with no errors in device manager,

Next turn off the laptop and modem, reboot the laptop then modem for the modem to assign an IP address.
