Modem conection I can not connect to my modem using my PC, but I can connect using my friend's laptop. I have the IP address from the laptop, but not from my PC, when I gave ipconfig. I went to device manager, and the modem that is on the motherboard Asus, has no driver. I bought a new EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Linksys and install the driver. Still I can not connect to internet. Re: modem conection

I have just re-installed windows XP home edition, now I have the same problem - my 1394 net adaptor is showing as IP unavailable. I am connected using telewest cable modem and belkin router. I can connect to the internet with my other computer. I've tried sticking in all the driver disks that came the the PC but nothing. I also tried to deinstall from device manager the IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller and restarted the PC. But still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Riz

Re: modem conection

In order to troubleshoot this problem, I need the following information:

Are you using a router?
What OS do you have?
Does your modem have a steady "online" light?
What IP address is coming up in ipconfig?

I suspect either a clash occurs or your P.C gets a different IP range from ther WI FI DHCP server.

According to Speed Guide the modems default internal IP is Try setting your network card with a static address of, subnet mask to, and default gateway to Set your primary DNS to and secondary to
After you do that, open a command prompt (Start>Run, type "cmd", press Enter), and type "ping". If you get a response you know that your PC is seeing the modem.
Most likely the modem is not broadcasting a DHCP address which is causing you these issues.

Need ip address subnet mask number gateway number and dns server number

If the ip address you need is the Internet IP address, this is assigned by you service provider.
If you need an internal ip address, have a look in the modems configuration window.
This window is accessed using internet explorer and typing in the local address of the modem, usually this is so enter this number. If this does not work, go to the modem manufacturers website and in the support section should be the manual (if you dont have one) and in the manual will be the ip address to access the modems configuration pages.
You must undertake these steps with your PC connected to the modem using a network cable, this will not work if you try this using a wireless link.
Usually, the admin and password details are admin admin. So type admin in the name section and admin in the password section.
Once you access the configuration area, navigate to the DHCP area and turn DHCP on.
DHCP stand for Dynamic Host Control Protocol. This simply gives an internal ip address to all the machines connected to the network.
Once this is done, save and reboot the modem and your PC.
Next, click on start and then run and enter CMD into the run dialog box.
When the text window opens, type in : ipconfig /all
dont forget the space between ipconfig and the / symbol
This will give you a list, in this list is the gateway ip address etc.
Usually, the DNS address is assigned automatically by your service provider but if not, you may have to contact them to get this number.
If you are trying to connect a second PC to the modem, all these details will be entered for you as long as you have "Obtain ip addresses automatically" ticked in the properties window of network connections. This is under the network connections applet in control panel. make sure everything is set to automatic.

How to connect to net via wire and wifi

I'm assuming Windows is the OS. After disconnecting from one access method but before connecting with another (modem to wifi or network wire, etc. the IP address on the notebook will likely not be acceptable to the new connection) open a DOS or Command "Box" or "Window" (go to Start --> Run --> type the word "cmd" or "command" without quotes and then click ok. At the prompt, (without the quotes) type: "ipconfig /release" (You can see all the variables for the ipconfig command by typing "ipconfig /?")

Establish a new connection via hardwire network or wifi and allow the PC obtain a new IP address as normal. If unable to access internet sites, you can try to forcing a new IP address by opening the DOS box again and type "ipconfig /renew" This should cause the machine to get a new IP address. The "ipconfig" commands will probably not force a modem connection to get a new IP address (I haven't run modems for a long time - so I'm not familiar with their procedure of obtaining an IP address)

When the SurfBoard modem is powered up and connects to the internet on the WAN interface, it automatically gets an IP address from your ISP. When another machine is powered up and is connected to the modem via a USB cable, it is automatically using the WAN IP address to communicate with the world. If it is connected via the Ethernet connection, the modem automatically issues it its own IP address for use on the internal network via DHCP. The modem's internal Ethernet connection is The next machine powered on will normally get an IP address of
