Modem conection

I can not connect to my modem using my PC, but I can connect using my friend's laptop. I have the IP address from the laptop, but not from my PC, when I gave ipconfig. I went to device manager, and the modem that is on the motherboard Asus, has no driver. I bought a new EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Linksys and install the driver. Still I can not connect to internet. Can you please help me conect to internet? I have a comcast cable internet connection.

In order to troubleshoot this problem, I need the following information:

Are you using a router?
What OS do you have?
Does your modem have a steady "online" light?
What IP address is coming up in ipconfig?

I have just re-installed windows XP home edition, now I have the same problem - my 1394 net adaptor is showing as IP unavailable. I am connected using telewest cable modem and belkin router. I can connect to the internet with my other computer. I've tried sticking in all the driver disks that came the the PC but nothing. I also tried to deinstall from device manager the IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller and restarted the PC. But still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Riz

- To answer questions from idiskosmos....
- router is one supplied by Virgin cable
- OS is Windows XP home edition
- modem has a steady light and is working fine on my other laptop
- ipconfig shows nothing. It just says Windows IP configuration with no numbers
