OnBoard USB ports (both front and back) will not recognize any devices

Not able to recognize any devices on onboard USB ports on Dell Dimension 360. Was working and then stopped. Have updated bios, bebuilt system, reinstalled OS, tried using USB keyboard to load into safemode, keyboard not recognized, boots normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Had to purchase 2 pci usb cards and would really like to have the slots free once again.

Been there done that... Still no glory. I've even gone ahead and downloaded the diagnostics from dell and they are seeing the ports. Just not anything plugged into them.

Yup, installed the new chipset just today and all the cables are secure.

Alrighty... So, I spent several hours on Friday, going through device manager and updating drivers for the Intel 82801 eb/ebm USB 2.0 balh blah blah... still nothing. They're there in the hardware profile, but it's like they don't supply power to anything plugged in. For example I have a little flash drive. When I plug it into my USB PCI card, it starts flashing red and then is recognized. When I plug it in to the onboard usb it's like there's nothing there, no flashy no beepy. No nothing. Very frustrating!

When you reloaded the OS did you reload all the drivers? Sometimes if you do not reinstall the Intel driver the USB port will not be recognized. Happened on the last two DELL's I reloaded. Go to DELL's website and download all the drivers for your model.
Dell support website http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/
Look up your model by service tag, it is the alphanumeric code on the barcode label on the back of your DELL and also sometimes found on either the front or top of your DELL (sometimes it is hidden beneath the USB port cover that you flip up.
Try that and see if it fixes it. Also make sure that the connector did not come loose when you opened the case.

So you have downloaded the Intel Chipset driver?

Also have you checked the cable from the front USB ports to the motherboard?

It sounds like you have tried everything that I would have tried. You say the ports on the back are non-responsive as well? Can you log in at all (Any PS2 ports on there by chance) or do the USB cards you installed work for keyboard and mouse?

If yoou can log in what does it say under Device Manager Particularly with the USB adapter/hub? Let's try there next.

A few things I thought of:

Could the cable be on backwards? (A shot in the dark, I know, but I too am running out of ideas)

Is there anything in the BIOS that turns on/off the onboard USB ports?

Also (I know this is a reach) but under the drives boot menu has the USB option been disabled?

I read one post that said shutdown the computer, unplug from wall, hold power button for 30 seconds, release the button then plug back in and try again. (another long shot, but doesn't cost anything).

Another post said that there seems to be a problem with the motherboards. Is your DELL by any chance still under warranty? If it is not you might call them and see if they have a known issue with USB ports not working and if so if they will replace the motherboard as a goodwill measure.

Here is a post I found for non-working USB ports on DELL XPS system, but try it, it might work for you:

Press Windows Button & Pause/Break to go to the System Properties (or right click on My Computer and choose Properties, but the other way is more fun.)
          Choose Device Manager.
Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section
Right click and choose Properties of one that says something about PCI bridge (I forget the exact name and after you fix the problem, this item goes away. If you aren't sure, you try step 5 and 6 on all of the USB items in that list.)
Click on the Driver Tab (it's kinda slow loading).
If the driver information on top says "Not found" or "Not installed" then click Update Driver... and let it look for the driver itself (I didn't need the XP CD but that might be because I keep a copy of it on my hard drive just incase. You might need it, I don't know.)
After it finds the driver, click Okay and USB should start working immediately - no reboots needed!

Try these and see if any of them help. If not at least maybe we are working towards a possible motherboard problem. But know that you are not alone.

OnBoard USB Ports Not Working and No PS/2 Ports!

When you boot the machine does it tell you what key to hit to get into the BIOS or System Setup? If so, press it. Maybe you need to try another keyboard if it won't allow you to press a key to get into the Bios or System Setup.

All the usb ports have stopped working, so my printer/scanner and mobile phone downloads are not accessable, nor is my external hard drive that i back up everything on. Front and back of machine!

You may want to check the BIOS settings; reboot and repeatedly press F2 until the setup screen appears. Check the onboard devices section and make sure that the onboard USB ports are enabled, then press F10, select 'Save and exit'. The system will reboot; check the ports again

No video

HI,
You can go into the BIOS , under onboard devices. Change the primary video controller to PCI.
refer to the following screen
http://supportapj.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700/sm/syssetup.htm#wp1052347

If the cards are not detected on the board. Then the problem could be of the PCIe slot .

Internal USB connector

You did not have to unplug the onboard USB ports.
Your OS should see the card reader and set it up, unless you are using Win98 or WinME. I would plug the onboard USB ports, then restart with the new internal card installed.
