the agitator spins with the tub so clothes wrapped around the agitator will have no effect on the spin other than a balance problem
The hum and failure to start spinning may be attributed to a failed (failing ) start run capacitor or program board not moving on properly
As the start /run capacitor is for the motor and if it start the wash cycle ok but after that cycle ( around 30-40 minutes) it may be too hot to restart the motor for the spin
I suggest that a technician be called in to get a proper diagnosis and a quote
unplug the machine- you should be able to turn the agitator by hand- turn it by hand- if you hear a noise, get a butter knife, or some other flat, thin item and move it around under the edge of the agitator, there may be a small object jammed under it! if so, then remove it, and enjoy the quiet! the agitators in many machines are removable- but you have to un-screw the top retainer, then use tool to loosen the agitator from the shaft- which can be a bit of a chore!! the older the machine, the more difficult! may want to check if your machine is level- but the spin cycle would tell you more! if it 'walks' across the room on spin, it's really out of level!! good luck!
Under the agitator there is a rachet mechanism that works the agitator. If it is stripped, it will skip until the next good tooth.. when it fails entirely the agitater will stop going back and forth. Its nylon and age along with overloading hastens its dearg.. If you can get the parts you can replace it yourself without difficulty. There is a single bolt in the center of the agitator top . Remove and loft agiyator straight up.
The drum/agitator bearings are bad I believe, or the gearbox has been damaged. This is an expensive repair. I would strongly consider buying a new washer. This is a great time to buy appliances since the stores are really competing, and the prices are at their lowest.
To check the agitator. Start the washer into wash cycle. Once started Push down on top of agitator. If it catches some times or all of the time when pushing down, then then doggets are worn, under the agitator. You`ll have to remove the agitator to see these. If by pushing down on the agitator, nothing changes, Then you probably have a transmition problem. Check this and let me know what you find.
