Right click on my computer --> manage --> disk management and check to see if it has a drive letter assigned ( you should be able to right click on it and assign a drive letter if it does not have one.

If not then look at my tip here

CD-ROM drive does not work. Does not show up in My Computer or Device Manager. I think this may have happened when I upgraded to Windows 7

Hi,

It happens often with my Dell 745 when I upgraded. Usually after a reboot it shows up again. Sometimes I have to turn off the computer, unplug the power, open the case and remove the Drive itself from the computer. The I plug it back in and turn the computer back on and it shows up again. I have contacted dell with the issue and they tell me update my drivers. But the problem comes back ever so often

Hope this helps

I cleaned out my start up folder and now my cd-dvd drive will not recogonize or open any discs. dell inspiron 530s running vista.

you will want to check the device manager to see if the drivers are not working properly.

Go to start then right click on my computer and go to properties
On the left side of the properties window you will see device manager click on that and find the dvd/cd-rom drives
click on the plus icon to the left of that and it will show you the drives right click and select update driver and then select search automatically for updated drivers.

My cd rom wil not work it just quit working for no reason it will not play any cds or let me burn anything

First open the "Device Manager" to check for any error messages related to the device and click on "Start" and select "Control Panel" .

Now double-click on the "System" icon then click on the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. A new window appears, and displays whether the device is working properly. If there are any errors, click the "Troubleshoot" button and follow the given onscreen instructions.

Check the DVD that you are trying to use to and ensure that it is free of dirt and scratches and the proper format compatible with your drive.

Now uninstall any drivers that may be on your computer from previous DVD drives.

Now download the latest driver updates for your DVD drive model from Dell website & install it.

Also check on Dell website that your machine has the minimum requirements to operate the drive.

Now restart your computer & check your DVD drive.
I hope issue has been resolved.
