Purchased a used compaq S5300NX desktop with monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other devices.First thing I did,was hookup the tower to my monitor, keyboard, mouse and internet connection. turned it on and it booted up fine and opened windows xp.I started checking files and discovered anti-virus protection was outdated and last update from windows or microsoft was 6 months ago.first I downloaded anti-virus software, then I downloaded microsoft and windows updates and updated service pack 2 to service pack 3.previous owner was still using internet explorer 6 so upgraded that to explorer 8.Then I shut it down and unplugged everything and pulled side cover off to see how dusty it was inside.I don't know how it was running, because of all the dirt and dust inside fans, optical drives, power supply and motherboard. After giving it a good cleaning with compressed air and vacumn,I replaced cover and hooked up monitor, keyboard, and mouse that came with it.When I hit power button the only thing that powered up are cpu and psu fans.Have solid green led on front and amber hard drive led stays on solid for only 2 minutes.Turned on monitor and it ghave green led for about 5 seconds then turns amber with black screen.Keyboard also has no power lights coming on but optical mouse has power. Swapped monitor with my old pc and it works fine.Hooked up harddrive in my old pc and itbooted right up showing all the updates that I had just downloaded,so I know it's ok.Reseated memory sticks, checked all connectors, and checked voltage from psu with fans running. All pins on atx connectors showed from 1-2 vol;ts under specs and on molex connections also.is my psu gone bad. Please help this old shade tree mechanic,if you can. Thanks

If there is noise "beep" then it has RAM issue/RAM port. If is not noising then it has motherboard issue. I guess you need to take it to the technician and ask him to fix or replace it.

Testimonial: "I actually carried it by repair shop owned by my neighbor and told him what had happened, and if it wasn't going to cost much to fix it,I could invest a couple more dollars in it.He messed with it for nearly an hour and it left him scratching his head.Ram was the 1st thing he checked and got same results as i got. With 1 or both sticks in there is no beeps, but with both out, then you got a long continous beep.He said it was possible that i discharged static elec. to motherboard while cleaning it.He's looking for used board that's cheap. If nothing else,I will use parts for other pc.I thank you kindly for your help and God bless"

I NEED TO HELP WIRING MY COMPAQ HOME COMPUTER

Set all items up ready to be installed Plug in your mouse and keyboard into the back of the tower. If u are using the old style connectors these have pins and will also be colour coordinated so you know where to plug into tower. They will have a notch inside so plug in carefully so not to break pins. If they are USB connections they will be square at the end and u will see where these plug in at the back of the tower these do not have colour coordination as u can plug in anywhere. Next your VGA cable, this is the cable that looks the same both ends with 15 pins in it. One end goes into your monitor and the other into the back of the tower these are shaped so they only fit in one way, again caution that you do not force in as you could bend the pins. Next ensure u have the power leads into the tower and the monitor, these are the cables with a plug on one end and a female 3 hole socket at the other, u will see where these plug into both devices. Next plug into wall ensuring socket is off first Then switch on Switch on your tower....monitor should come on by itself, if not hit the power button on your monitor Voila ...done

Can I use a compaq persario without a mouse? I am not sure if this is the right model. It just says compaq persario and has windows vista. the mouse died.

If you computer is a desktop meaning it has a computer tower and a separate monitor on it its called a desktop computer and you really need a mouse for it, but if its a laptop/notebook those that are slim and without any tower for it you can use it without any mouse since it has a touch pad that you can use as a replacement for your mouse.

My monitor has kicked into sleep mode and won't "wake up".

Unplug all the Cables from Compaq Presario 5103 CL and leave the Keyboard, mouse and monitor cable pluged in.

Now make sure the power cable of the monitor should be pluged in and the power cable of the tower should be pluged in.

Now to check if the montor is fine just unplug the video cable only which will show no input signal on the screen. If it shows this signal the monitor is fine. Plug back in the video cable.

If the monitor is going to sleep mode it might be possible that the old computer ( Compaq Presario 5103 CL ) is in stand by mode. hit any key on the keyboard and it should come back .

If it is not in the stand by mode then do one thing. Check the same monitor with the new computer. If it is working. Perfect ..!

Do one thing now ..!

Unplug all the cables from your old system and then press the power button for 30 sec and let it go. Now plug the keyboard, mouse and the monitor try again.
If it works Perfect. If not ..!

Then you need to open the tower and check on the processor FAN is it running..? If its not running you will not get the display as the fan is responsible for the display on the screen. Otherwise...!

Check the Tower possibly the Tower is not getting the power.

Try these steps and let me know If it works

Mouse works, keyboard won't..plugged in another mouse, it works, keyboard wont..how do I tell if it's the keyboard or the tower? Husband says its the tower.

try to plug the keyboard in another computer. If it is analog the lights dont come on the keyboard (caps lock, NUM lock, ect.) it is the tower if the lights do not turn on, it is the keyboard. If your keyboard is USB then try to use it on another computer if it doesnt work it is the keyboard, but if so I would make sure any software the keyboard came with is installed and try it agian.

My emachine T1742 desktop will not turn on. When plugged in the power supply's fan turns on, cpu fan doesnt start, both hdd/power led's flicker and pressing power button doesnt power on/off system.

Disconnect all the devices from the computer(tower) including keyboard, mouse, monitor(everything)..even the power cable

Now keep on holding down the power button on the computer tower for 15-30 seconds..

Now release the power button, plug in the power cable, monitor, keyboard, mouse and turn on the computer...

If it works, great!!!

Otherwise, take it for repair..

Got a used Compaq Pressario SR1303wm and need to set up correctly

Monitor into Small Blue connector at back.
If Mouse and keyboard are Round and not Rectangular in shape then that's a PS/2 Mouse and keyboard. Purple goes into Keyboard slot at back. Green goes into Mouse at back. Watch for the design as the pins inside each one need to be inserted accordingly.
If they ARE rectangular then that is a USB connection. On the back connect the keyborad and mouse to the top two. Again, only going to insert one ways.
