Question about Refrigerators

3 Answers

Refrigerator Freezing I have a Sear's Side by Side Refrigerator 106.50542001 made by Whirlpool. The Refrigerator side has been freezing since replacing the Condenser fan unit with a universal motor. I then replaced the Thermostat control unit. The Refrigerator compartment unit is still freezing. The Freezer section goes below -27 and the Refrigerator section goes to 10 to 18 degrees very quickly. I have to shut the unit off to warm it up. Changing the Temperature settings in any direction does not amount to any increases in the refrigerator compartment.

Re: Refrigerator Freezing

The damper is stuck in the open position that freezes the top compartment and freezes the water lines and filter on the top shelf and will crack it. Move things down lower and shut off water till you fix.

Re: Refrigerator Freezing

Thank You to (the Dr's) suggestion that there may be a damper problem. This made me rethink and open the system up and reverse the clockwise motor direction of the universal condenser moter. This corrected the freezing problem that I was having in the refrigerator compartment. A repair man told me my fan had to be in the clockwise rotation when it actually needed to be in the counterclockwise postition.

Re: Refrigerator Freezing

Your refrig has a mechanical damper (the a b or c knob) it may be broken (uncommon ) \ is the freezer fan running even if the cold control is cycled?? Other than that it must be a faulty cold control These are very reliable refrigs and your problem is interesting. Please rate my solution

Items freeze on top shelf of refrigerator. All temps are per factory specs.

If it is only freezing on the upper shelf then you will need to replace the "air diffuser". It is not closing when the refrigerator temp is reached. Here is the part to order.

Not freezing or cooling

The clicking is probably the starter/overload relay which starts the compressor. If the relay is good then the compressor is bad. Check your compressor relay-

Vegetable draw is freezing the vegetables

if you pull out the vegetable drawer, you will notice a vent on the left side in the back. get some tape ( I use aluminum tape ) and cover the bottom half of the vent, that will help keep your vegetables from freezing. that should solve your problem. Joe
