hi jerry,
thank you for using fixya.
the issue was cause by a recent update on your computer, I just had an update for my Adobe acrobat reader for DPFs and somehow my scanner acted up on my, almost like what you are experiencing.
without doing any uninstallation, i performed a system restore to remove the current update i have for my adobe acrobat read for PDF's, and that's it, after removing the system restore and the updates, it worked like it did like the past months.
here is how you do system restore.
Before you open the System Restore console, you may want to saveyour work and close all programs since System Restore requires you torestart your computer.
There are two ways to access System Restore – through
Help and Support or through your
All Programs folder.
Through Help and Support:
1.
Click
Start, and then click
Help and Support.
2.
Under
Pick a Task, click
Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
3.
Follow the instructions on the wizard.
Through the All Programs menu:
1.
Click
Start.
2.
Point to
All Programs.
3.
Point to
Accessories.
4.
Point to
System Tools.
5.
Click
System Restore.
6.
Follow the instructions on the wizard.
Creatinga restore point can be useful any time you anticipate making changes toyour computer that are risky or might make your computer unstable. Ifsomething goes wrong, you select the restore point you just created andWindows XP undoes any system changes made since that time.
From this link.hope this helps,

- thanks for providing more information then.
what was the last hardware component you have installed ont he computer?
did you add memory to the printer?
if you have another scanner have you tried to run it on the same computer that has the problem?
this is so because the pirnter worked on another computer meaning its functionality are working right.
if you want to contact me please do so and we will try to chat about it. my address is babolface20@aim.com I have an instant messenger so we may chat about this live.

- because the main focus on everything now is back-tracking everything to when the printer worked. we cannot just say that this is a resource error / conflict on the computer and the printer but possibly a hardware that triggered the fault.
removing that will help, but it may alter the working state of the printer.
