My Garmin Nuvi 1490 was operating perfectly. As I've done in the past, I hooked it up to Garmin Express to update its maps. Now the unit no longer speaks at all, and streets don't show up on the screen - just major highways. Garmin suggested reinstalling English. It loaded halfway and quit. Garmin has made my Garmin unit unusable!

Don't give up have them help you restore. Usually a restore to factory setting should help.

Have you tried to remove the battery?

A lot of garmins have the same thing happen after just months of working great, a very strange thing, usually nothing really helps.

for some reason these systems will freeze up and in most cases they are deemed unrepairable, if you can, I would return it and get a new one or a different one because this is a common problem and as far as I see, Garmin doesn't have a solution to this.

thank you and have a good day, I am so sorry about the bad news

How do i reset my garmin nuvi 200w satnav it says no detailed maps found how can i reinstall them

Locate the reset button, located on the back of the device, in the lower left corner. Remove the sticker covering the button, and use a straightened paper clip to depress the tab.

To reinstall maps

Connect your Garmin Nuvi to your computer via USB cable. You can only update the maps through connecting to your computer.

Open the "myGarmin" website and sign in with your Garmin account. Make sure to sign in with the account that you've purchased the map updates on.

heres a link to the site;

http://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/login.htm.

Click the "myMaps" tab on the myGamrin dashboard. This will load a list of all of your purchased map upgrades.

Click the drop-down menu in the "Recent Map Purchases" section. Select your Garmin Nuvi from the list of devices.

Install the Garmin Communicator Plugin when prompted. This is required in order for the Garmin website to transfer the map files to your Gamrin software on your computer.

Download and install Garmin Express. This is the program that allows your computer to interact with your Garmin Nuvi.

Register your device in Garmin Express. If you haven't already registered your device, you'll be prompted to when you start Garmin Express. You'll need to register in order to update the maps.

Click the "Updates" tab in Garmin Express. This will show all of the available updates for your Nuvi, including the new map update you just purchased.

Click the "Show Details" option next to your Map Update. Click the "Install" button that appears. You will need to accept the agreement before the update installs.

Wait for the maps to download and install. Once you agree to the terms, the map update will begin downloading to Garmin Express, and will then be transferred to your Nuvi. This will likely take several minutes to complete.

Close Garmin Express and unplug the Nuvi when the update is complete. The Nuvi will reboot and begin installing the updated software on the device. This may take another couple of minutes.

If you weren't automatically prompted to install Garmin Express, you can download it from

When encountering errors such as "No Map Data Available" and Garmin Express does not recognize your Garmin nuvi, check to see if your Garmin nuvi is out of storage space from your computer. Solution related to the fact that when brought up as the E: drive in windows there were 0 bytes free space on the Garmin nuvi. To get Garmin Express to recognize a unit which is full, do a search on the Windows Drive (E:) for "gmap" then choose "Open file location" This will get into the hidden ".system" directory. From there, delete the largest file map, such as "gmapprom" (or move this file to your hard drive). Afterward, reboot your computer to have Garmin Express software recognize your Garmin nuvi. On older units, also purchase a microSDHC card to be able to store the newest maps, such as the US & Canada 2.6Gb map file, which will not fit on the internal unit alone or a 2Gb card. The Garmin Express software will recognize 4Gb to 32Gb microSDHC Class 10 or UHS-I cards formatted to FAT32 and install the newest maps automatically to them. Some have reported that 4Gb cards are not large enough. I had used a 16Gb SanDisk Ultra PLUS UHS-I card ($10.88 Walmart) successfully on my Garmin nuvi 1450LMT
