You have to setup the com prot for the serial connection to be recognized.
Go to the system ICON in the control settings.
Select hardware tab then device manager
you'll see the com ports select com port one
right click and select properties then the port settings tab.

Check you product adapter and make sure you have set the speed settings, data bits, flow control according to manufactures specs. save and this should solve you problem.
note: make sure there is no other peripheral operating on your system this may be utilizing your comports and restricing your connection.
good luck.

My garmin GPS 12 needs a serial port connection. New HP laptop with Windows 7 OS only has USB connections. Salesman sold me a Belkin F5U109 adapter but windows wont recognise it.

You should install the drivers for the adapter running as administrator. If the adapter is not supported by windows 7 you should give it back to salesman and get a new one compatible with windows 7

Afte installing the operating system the audio driver was gone

Hello

I am assuming you re-installed Windows XP Pro on the laptop. If so, bookmark this web page

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=324377&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=324375&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093

This has all of the drivers for your model laptop. Download and install any missing drivers.

If you are installing Windows Vista or 7 - there aren't any "official" drivers for those operating systems and this laptop. Your best bet its to try the Windows XP Professional drivers first. If this fails you can try the Windows 2000 drivers but probably won't work.

If the above does not work, there is always the USB Audio Adapter option - purchase a USB audio device and install the drivers for it. This would resolve driver and hardware issues. Amazon lists one for a $1.

I can't install the drivers

It is discontinued, so you will most likely need to buy a new adapter as it is unlikely that there is a 64-bit driver available.  Make sure that any adapter you buy has Vista 64-bit support.  Try the following google search: "64-bit USB to serial adapter"

Problem with an usb-rs232 adapter

There is a good chance the weak spot is your serial to usb adapter. The signals are not compatible so the adapter has a chip and serial driver to convert the signals. If the adapter is not fast enough to convert the signals, you get an error. Here is some more info on adapters.

install the vendor specifig driver for the PCMCIA. because windows XP sp2 is also able to detect the device and when you push the device online it is detecting and there is some other device which has got same IRQ and that is conflict with this and stop. see any error that is generated in event viwer * run>type "eventvwr" and enter * see the application/system try to detect your error log and see what microsoft says about it. otherwise post the error report Thanks Arun
