Our sony vaio laptop beeps everytime we start it up for a bout 30 secs, sometimes longer. We usually try hitting a few different keys and then it stops and continues to boot up to the desktop. Once we get to the desktop, windows live messenger opens up and we see a series of 4's going accross the screen in the username box. Once you hit the back space button and hold it, it will finally stop but then we hear a few ponging pinging sounds and then it all just stops and seems to work fine...I was told it might have something to do with the keyboard seeing as a few of the keys stick, but also told it may have something to do with drivers or memory. If anyone has anything to offer it would be appreciated.
If you hit some keys and then it starts - it indicates a stuck key on the keyboard. Check the keys to make sure they are all fully up and nothing has been spilled on them or gotten stuck under them. Keys can be removed usually by prying gently under the edge and replaced by pressing down firmly. Probably what is happening is the if a program opens and you see a series of 4's is that the "4" key is the one sticking partially and preventing boot up. The beeeep is simply to tell you something is wrong with hardware, ie: keyboard, mouse, memory will all generate a long beep or several short beeps. The owners manual will list beep codes to help you determine where to look to find the problem.
