Rusty dish rack

A few of the prongs that hold the dishes on the upper rack of my Maytag have rusted to the point of falling off. The rack is still usable and the dishwasher is about 7 years old, but runs fine. I am concerned about the rust that remains exposed where the prongs rusted off, both because of the dishes that continue to be washed in the dishwasher and the further damage to the rack that is likely to result from exposure where rust remains. Is there a product that can be painted on or applied to cover the rusted area that is safe to use insisde the dishwasher where the dishes are washed. Can I repair the rusted rack?

When I contacted the local dealer, I was told there was a product that could be applied to the rusty areas, including those areas where prongs had detached from rust. For about $25.00, I was provided with a small bottle of paint like substance that is applied with a small brush. When it dries it has the same rubbery consistency as the orignal coating. However, it is a temporay fix. Even though I applied it to every rusty spot I could find, other areas continue to rust and I continue to appply the coating when they become obvious. It will probably give me a few more years of use before I have to either buy a new shelf, or a new dishwasher, based on the absurd price of a replacemnt shelf

Same problem. Those new racks are so expensive. Some of the new Maytags list nylon racks. Are all nylon and might they last longer?

I have the same problem on the portable dishwasher PDC3600AWE. Looks like Maytag really sucks, dishwasher is a little over 2 years old. I will give them a call, lets see if they stand behind they product and brand name or try to find excuses not to replace the racks. If they don't resolve this issue for me, I will say adios to Maytag forever and will happily advertise my ordeal.

Clearly a design or manufacturing flaw. I have the same model and the rack is disintegrating after 6 years. I believe it is a manufacturing flaw. Our previous dishwasher rack lasted over 20 years in the same conditions. Same construction, vinyl covered steel. New upper and lower racks cost over 200.00 and there is no guarantee that this won't happen every six years. I recommend a new non-Maytag dishwasher as soon as you can. Meanwhile, limp along with the defective racks.

I am having the same problem with my Maytag dishwasher that is just over 2 years old. I would like to know the cause of this as I do not put cups over the prongs. When we purchased our home 16 years ago it had a Maytag dishwasher that was approx. 2 years old. Over the years the prongs on that one started rusting off. Eventually, so many fell off that it was hard to arrange the dishes as there were so few prongs to support them. We replaced the dishwasher because the price new racks was ridiculous . Now I am having the same issue??

I had the same issue with my old dishwasher. My parents own a hardware store and my mom introduced me to Rerack Dishwasher Rack Repair by Performix. It's only about $6 for a bottle. You should be able to find it at a hardware store or maybe Lowe's or Home Depot. You can also find it on Amazon. It takes some time to dry but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying new racks/dishwasher.

Top dish rack dishes don't get clean model 8575637

Most dishwashers have a rotating spray bar underneath the upper rack. Over time bits of food can clog up the holes and then dishes won't get clean in the upper rack. Check to make sure all the holes in the spray bar are clear and that it is rotating freely.

Dishes on top shelf not getting clean

Check your upper wash arm.... check the holes, especially the ones at the end of the arm. Are they possibly clogged with debris or hard water? This is the usual cause of dishes on the top rack not getting clean. The holes at the end of the wash arm are angled to eject the water at an angle to use the reaction to push the wash arm around. If those holes are clogged, then the arm won't rotate, and only those few dishes or glasses right under the arm will get clean, and the remaining 80% of the dishes on the upper rack won't get clean!

Rust spots on bottom rack

You may need to replace the rack. Dishwasher soap is aggressive and once an area is exposed, it will rust fast. Make sure you don't place sharp objects in direct contact with a rack. The action inside the washer can cause them to move and rub through the metal rack coating.

Kitchen Aid SS Dishwasher KUD102CRBS1 - Top Rack has 3 rusty spot

Looks like you can get the upper rack for about half that, direct from Sears-
Dishwasher Dishrack Upper Part Number 8539234 Sears PartsDirect
Still kinda pricey if you only have a few bad spots.

There is special touchup coating (never tried it myself, but looks like it gets good reviews, and the price is right)

Or prong covers if you just have rust or damage on the tips (I've used ones like these, the long ones stay on good)

My viking dishwasher does not rinse the soap scum off the dishes

Maybe . . . remove the lower rack and invert it. Look for cracked or missing plastic coating, exposed, rusted & possibly "swollen" inner steel rod/wire. If found, remove the upper rack and look for more of the same. What you think is "soap scum" is probably rust and other iron compounds leached by the dish soap out of the rusted steel onto the dishes and the dishwasher interior. The following worked for me . . .

To clean the interior (with both racks removed), set to "No Heat" dry, then "Pot & Pan" wash and allow to fill. Open door, dump in a bottle of "Lime A-Way", close & latch door and allow to complete cycle. This should remove most rust and iron-sulphate deposits from interior. If not, scrub them with Lime A-Way and a ScotchBrite pad, then cycle again.

Racks must be replaced (Viking are very expensive, Asko, Bosch, or other lower racks may fit: check your neighbors' racks for fit), upper rack must be Viking unless you can exact-match the Asko or Bosch equivalent.

Possible fix: remove the loose plastic coating and flaking rust with a knife, ruff plastic coating with ScotchBrite, clean with rubbing alcohol, then treat metal/rust with "rust converter" (hardware or home imp store), wash with soapy water, rinse, then clean with rubbing alcohol, dry fully, coat with "high temp" (orange or yellow) silicone sealant (auto part store), covering exposed metal and a half inch or so over the plastic coating. Let set for a day or two.

A trip through the dishwasher for all your stained stainless, glasses and non-metallic coated or non-metallic decorated dishes with Lime A-Way as above (on new or "rebuilt" racks) should get the metallic scum and rust off them.

Maytag portable dishwasher, dish racks are very rusted in 2 years

This is Maytags solution

Do the dishwasher racks have chips or scratches showing exposed metal underneath?
If minor rack repairs are needed, a dishwasher rack repair kit just might work. To review this product or purchase the kit, click here.
Should you purchase the kit online, enter Promo Code F9A75Q4 in the Review Order screen when you check out to receive a 10% discount on your order.
For more severe rack damage, a replacement rack may need to be purchased; call the Maytag Customer eXperience Center toll-free at 1-866-616-2601, Monday-Friday, 8AM-6PM, Eastern Time.

I would call the toll free number and see if a free replacement is available. If not at least try to get a big discount on replacing them.

Good luck and thanks for using Fix Ya, please take the time to rate this solution (from Fix Ya, not Maytag, I didn't like their solution).

Maytag Quiet Series 300/Dishwasher leaving gritty stuff on dishes

My model is simillar Cheri's. Every couple years I have to remove the plastic spray bars. They are held on by a simple torque screw. Once removed you will see debris plugging many of the holes. I have found this on all 4 of my spray bars. This debris prevents the right amount of water in the wash and rinse cycles. The upper spray bars seem to be the worse. This explains the trouble most folks have with glasses in the upper rack. Also check the docking station. You will fiind it along the back wall of your unit. The plastic tubes on the backside of each rack will slide into a hole in the docking station. After a few years the rubber seal in the docking station will be worn away. Once this happens, it prevents the correct water pressure to the upper rack. The replacement part snaps into place and cost about $25.
