Question about Lexmark X3480 InkJet Printer
This is because the white plastic rocker switch which is very poorly attached to the micro switch at the back of the unit has become dislodged which means the micro switch is permanently open. Unfortunately due to its very poor design it has probably lost its plastic lugs which keep it attached to the micro switch.
Locate the dislodged rocker switch, you may have to turn the printer upside down and shake it. If it won't come out, shake it after removing the cover...
If the plastic lugs are still in place then you are lucky. You will need to get inside the unit to refit it...
Open the unit as if you were about to replace the ink. Unclip the plastic prop at the top; you can pinch it using a pair of pliers. The cover will now hinge up much further, there is some minor friction still but it will come up to 90 degrees with a gentle tug.
It will now easily lift away from the hinges on the main body. You can remove the ribbon leads if you like. They go back again very easily.
You should now be able to get your fingers inside the unit. You will need a flat blade screw driver to assist you refitting the rocker. You should feel it clip into place if the plastic lugs are in place, even if they are worn. Test it and check it won’t fall off again easily.
It is much more likely that it will fall off again as the lugs have worn away.
This can be fixed by heating a medium sized paper clip with a lighter and pushing it through the side of the rocker, in the same location as the lugs. Cut the paper clip with the pliers, this will leave a 2-3mm pin sticking through the side of the rocker. Do this for both sides. Resite the rocker, then using a flat blade screw driver push the pins into the holes on the black micro switch. This should be quite easy as the rocker will still site in the correct position even if they are missing.
You will now have a fully functioning switch which will be far stronger than the original design.
Put everything back together, and test it.

I had the same problem, here's the solution.
When you life the cover up along the back end of the gray plastic bottom cover, you'll see a square opening close to the right side hinge.
There should be a little white plastic piece sticking out of there. If not, it fell into the guts of the printer. You have to remove the gray plastic and find the white lever and replace it onto a micro-switch along the back where the square opening is/was.
You'll see a PCB (printed circuit board) there and the micro-switch will be located on that...

Try this it worked
Remove the philips srewews onthe front of the cover when it is open. Once removed At the back of the unit 2/3 rd from the left there is a small switch if this is pushed in ( and held by whatever means sellotape etc it will opperate normally (to change cartridge you may have to re do)

The very same thinh has just happened to me. We are not the only ones from the postings on the internet. I have visited the Lexmarx solution centre which states the following: Possible cause of the error This can happen if the lever on the cover open sensor is knocked off the switch assembly. What to do Try to determine if there is a hardware fault. Do the following: Disconnect the power cable and the USB cable. Remove the cartridges from the printer. Check that the power cable is plugged directly into a wall socket. Reconnect the power cable. If the error persists, please contact Lexmark for further instructions. Contacting Lexmark Please contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance. NOTE: When calling for service, you will need to know your printer model type and serial number. Please call from near the printer in case the technician asks you to perform a task involving the printer. I have tried the above and it did not work. The telephone number for technical support is 02073652496 but they also need your credit card details as a fee is charged for technical support if the guarantee has run out (did not say how much) Hope this helps

I Did everything stated and checked the x3470 solution aswell. It would seem that once one problem occurs another takes ot place. List of how things happened.
No cartridge, when there was 1, so bought new cartridge.
Cover open, cover wasnt open found white piece put it back on. (must state when instucted was told to be careful with white strip, not to crease. As always things didnt go to plan. So might be that. But..)
Paper jammned, Guess What! Yes thats right. No paper in it.
This is the beautiful bit, took white piece off. Put a screw driver where white piece is, when its in Cover Open, when its out Clear Paper.. This is my conclusion. Its Knackered and a LIAR...
P.S Check instructions on x3470 very clear, i know its different but still best photos of the lot...GOOD LUCK....

Our printer luckily is still under a year old. when i spoke to the help centre they said sensor is at fault and are replacing printer so i presume here is no quick fix - sorry guys

EXACTLY the same thing has happened to me.
im a university student and so this has now caused me MAJOR problems.
and i cannot afford to pay for the techincal support.
this is crap
and i also tried to ring there customer suport an it sayd it would charge at £15 an hour for an U/G one.
I HATE LEXMARK

Tips for a great answer:
1. Make sure the printer is on.
2. Open the printer cover. The print cartridge carrier
moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy. Note: If the carrier does
not automatically move to the center, turn off the printer/unplug the printer
from the power source and then slide the carrier to the center.
3. Remove both cartridges from the carrier.
4. Close the printer cover.
5. Re-brick your printer.
Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the
back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.
6. When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge
7. Close the printer cover and check for any errors.
8. If no error appears, reinsert the other cartridge.
Close the printer cover.
9. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear with a new cartridge. Then try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.
