SOURCE: Kitchaide Dishwash Door

There is normally 2 heavy springs & cables that control the "falling" of the door located in the bottom of the machine or it the door itself. Sounds like one (or both) have snapped.

SOURCE: dishwasher door latch

I just had this problem (or should I say, finally had the time to deal with it). Google searches revealed different ways to get the door open including repairmen with crowbars (causing replacement of the entire control assembly $$$), having to back out the top screws that hold the dishwasher in place (and to the top of the counter) with pliers, then moving the dishwasher out from the counter.

Nuts to all that.

First things first. Turn OFF the power to the dishwasher.

I wound up on my back first watching how the handle moved and which side seemed to be loose, in my case the right side was moving freely. After first trying to hold the handle in the "down" position with a springhook (to no avail) I wound up biasing the handle to the right (with a screwdriver inserted on the left side of the handle) while moving the handle in the "operate" direction. Suddenly (and without warning) the entire handle assembly moved to the right and created an opening that made it simple to stick a screwdriver up to operate the latch manually.

Four screws later the control panel was out, the offending broken handle assembly was in my hands to discover that they could have easily made the little tabs the hold the handle in place a whole lot sturdier, but let's not go there...

If I had to do the whole thing again it would have taken me less than 5 minutes to open it up I'm sure. Now to simply order the part and install it when it arrives. The best part is we can still run the dishwasher until it gets here!

SOURCE: Dishwasher door won't open, latch seems broken

Hello, I read your comment. If the latch is broken, then I suggest first of all disconect the electricity from the dishwasher. You may want to try using a small screwdriver and insert it where the latch is to activate the opening mechanism. If it doesnt open, then there are two options, I suggest to call the technical service to replace the door with a new latch.

Hope I have been of help.

Regards Nevd ´ll fixya.

SOURCE: Door Drops Open - How to Fix

Today my father and I solved this problem permanently for about four dollars. Yes only $4!!! I priced out the total repair for a Kitchenaid repair guy with parts and labor to be at least $250 and that was just too much for a $1500 dishwasher. Here's how we did it and here's how kitchenaid should have done it in the first place...
After searching the internet and diagnosing the problem with my kitchenaid superba dishwasher, I also found that my nylon pulley spring system on one side had ruptured. Door made loud explosive sound one day when opening and then would just drop open real hard once unlatched after that day. I really didn't care too much about it until my three year old almost opened the door on my one year old's head. I took off the bottom panel and found a broken nylon string and a couple of white plastic pieces.
That lead me to this website.
So I looked into fixing this myself and got ready to order the part from here

and found it would be about $25 with shipping and handling and would arrive in about a week. I figured that there has to be a better way than nylon string to absorb the transition from metal spring to metal door. This problem was bound to recur in a short period of time because nylon is not made to take that tensile force. We went to Lowe's, bought four feet of 1/16 inch galvanized woven steel cable (total cost of $1) and two sets of ferrule and stops ($3 for both). 7_9_2012_4_05_45_am.jpg
Then we unscrewed the two side fasteners holding the dishwasher to the cabinets (We had already unscrewed the two screws and removed the base board). We placed masking tape on the floor to prevent the foot pads from scratching as we pulled out the dishwasher. With a little upward lift, my father was able to turn the foot pads and create more room and we then placed felt pads under them to padd additional protection from scratching.
Here is the broken nylon and its plastic pieces and the spring
close up of the poor construction that this heavy door relies on
We then measured out the distance from the end of the spring through the pulleys and to the hook on the door to be 17 inches, and thus, constructed a steel replica 16.5 inches to keep everything tight.

So, from then end of one loop to the end of the other loop measured 16.5 inches. We double crimped each end with the ferrules.
The other side was intact, but we just went ahead and removed it and replaced it with our new steel cable replicas. Here is the final insertion showing the steel cable going through the pulleys and hooking on the door.
The door works great. My wife can't believe it. Most of all, my children are safe from head injuries from the heavy door. This whole escapade took about 45 minutes to do and literally only cost $4, yes four dollars. I suggest two people to do the job as my father was helpful in holding the flashlight and making sure we had enough slack on the water lines when we pulled out and pushed the washer back in. I hope this helps anyone that googles 'kitchenaid superba door' or 'kitchenaid superba broken heavy door'. Eat your heart out kitchenaid, make the next line of washers with a steel cable instead of nylon.

Dishwasher wont start

Most likley problem is the door is not closing properly or the door latch switch is faulty. This means the dishwasher controller is not getting the right signal before commencing the wash cycle.
Need to check the closure of the latch. If this is ok then replace the door switch.

Hello- Parts are available locally at app. parts store. Need complete model #. Usually have to pull out unit to install. Replace both sides. There will be a spring, sometimes with a cord to pull door up. Either part can break, so get both. Not easy, but you can save a bit by doin it yourself. Hope this helps. -Thanks- ED

1E error LD-14aw2

I do not have specific info on your model, as I believe it is one not intended for USA distribution (where I am at) but, you might want to check the following, which applied to some LG dishwashers produced between Jan or 2005 and Feb. or 2007.

The black mastic sound insulation material inside the dishwasher door can soften from the heat inside the dishwasher, allowing the wires inside the door to become embedded in it. If this has happened, the insulation on the wires can soften and begin to dissolve, resulting in shorted or broken wires. This may cause various error codes which may send you on a wild goose chase.

Take the screws out of the door and inspect the black insulation and the wires. If any wires are embedded in the black mastic, you may cut them and bypass them with a new section of wire, then make sure to add an insulating material to separate the wires from contacting the black mastic. In severe cases, the inner door panel must be replaced (they no longer use that type of mastic) and the wiring harness for the dishwasher would also be replaced. (a set of all the wires and plugs).

LG LD-14AT2 SS Dishwasher.

The door frame is bent and will need to be inspected if further damage is done.  It's possible to fix but if the dishwasher frame is bent, then it's a total loss.  The frame is not repairable or are there any parts for it.
