Sounds like you had a power outage?-- did the lights go dim for a few minutes, before the power actually went out?-- Sometimes, low voltage will cause the compressor motor to over heat-- so it might have to 'cool down'-- What happened next?-- Did you try it again an hour or so later/-- Tell us more-- Mack B
Testimonial: "Unfortunately we were gone for a week (of course). What we can tell is that the power went out long enough to make clocks flash. There was still ice in the freezer, but even though the "Cooling is Off" status light was lit, the internal fridge light did not turn on when doors were opened and the fridge and freezer were not running. The outlet had good power going to it, so the breaker did not trip. In the manual it says you can turn cooling "off" and "back on" by manually pushing buttons on the control panel. We successfully turned the cooling feature back on, but are wondering why the unit did not automatically turn back on after the power outage. We leave the house empty a lot so need a fridge that will come back on by itself after an outage. Nervous, too, that we will have a hard time getting Whirlpool to deal with this issue. Would love to hear if anyone has had similar issues with this or any other Whirlpool refrigerators. Thanks for your post!"

With the unit unplugged, take off the back cardboard panel. On the lt rear side you will find the compressor. On the lt side of the compressor you will see a white box mounted on the side, this is the relay, and it most likely will have a zip tie holding it on. Cut the zip tie or unhook the clip. Gently pry the relay from the side of the compressor. If it is badly burnt make sure there are 3 connectors on the compressor, sometimes they will burn one off or burn it so bad the compressor will need to be replaced $$$$ if not in warranty. If its not burnt thats hopefully what you will find, hold out your hand with the compressor side of the relay pointing down. Shake the relay like a salt shaker into your hand. If you get grey flakes/chunks in your hand the relay is bad and will need to be replaced. easy fix for about $45 - $50.

You have a bad overload/relay . This is the piece pluged onto the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires going to it . The part number is 8201786 . It is easily replaceable and instructions come with it . Price is around $60.00 .
