Check your manual, some machines no longer need oil and you will do harm by using oil.

What about Oiling?

If you look at the Oiling Instructions in the owner's manual, it has a picture of where the oil should be applied. Only one or two drops!! It should probably be oiled frequently--about every 8 hours of sewing time. Pfaff probably sells a sewing machine oil for your machine. Just tell them your machine model and they should know what you need. Do NOT use 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the old stinky brown stuff from grandma's sewing basket!

Where should I clean and oil an unidentified sewing machine?

cleaning out any machine is good , as most don't get \done get done to often , id be cautious on oiling a machine and only use a oil spec'd by the mfg. as some oils can soften and damage gears and such on some machines , oils should always be used sparingly and not left to drip down inside to points unknown , me id prefer to use caning wax for lubrication, as it never runs from where you put it like oils will

so add oil to only those spots that the owners manual tells you to oil,you owners manual is all about your machine, follow it,just because there are extra holes doesnt mean they go to something

How often should it be oiled?

sewing machine oil is a very light oil so it does not hang around very long. if you are a heavy user of the machine it is best to oil it every month or so. if when it is stored for a long period it should be oil then too. there are one or 2 bits that need some light greasing too. some 3-1 oil is good for the job and do all the moving parts lightly and not too much oil as it will mark your clothes. hope this helps.

Can I use synthetic motor oil for a very old industrial sewing machine which has a oil tank

Probably but you have to be careful that the weight of the oil is appropriate - hopefully it says what weight oil to add. Adding oil that is too thin may cause leakage/dripping onto your projects. Adding oil that it too thick may cause the unit to run loudly and not get proper lube.

Also, some synthetic oils do not blend well with common oils and may form an emulsion (like mayo). If it is very old, using cheaper common oil won't hurt it. I would stick with the common oil unless you clean out the old oil from the tank.

Good luck and please rate me.
