Question about Dell M992 19" CRT Monitor

1 Answer

Dell m992 monitor screen width

I cannot increase my screen width to the edges on the screen. My display is at least two inches from the edge on both sides and the adjustment are already at 100%. I'm using Windows XP home with a ATI radeon graphics card. Changing resolutions seem to make the display even narrower. Don't know what else to try.

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2 with a dell CRT M992 monitor, and i am
having the exact same issue, i've tried the above suggested
troubleshooting method with no success :(. I've tried changing the
geometry, size, everything. It's like window's graphics is maxed out
and its not synced up with my computer's display... Anyone else have
any ideas? Will be calling dell tomorrow to see if they have a solution
    as well...

The link below is a Digitally signed M992 monitor driver. http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R44148&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=51992 Also try upgrading to the latest ATI software and drivers. You can also try and change the frequency refresh rate to 75mhz. It in the Control Panel under 'Display' and tab 'Monitor'. It shows a list for frequencies you can try.

No LCD Display on Dell Vostro 1700 - 17"

It sounds like you have been pretty thorough trying to resolve the lcd problem

A blacked-out screen doesn't necessarily indicate a broken monitor.
If the computer has run out of charge or is in hibernation or sleep mode,
if the screen is too dark, or if the display cable has come disconnected from the motherboard, the screen may appear black or fail to turn on. To fix a blacked-out laptop screen, troubleshoot the screen settings, check the LCD connector and see if the computer is awake and receiving power.
Touch the touchpad or move the external mouse to see if the computer is asleep or hibernating. If the computer fails to respond, press "Enter" on the keyboard. Press the power button if the screen remains black.

Confirm that the power indicator light, found at the front of the computer or above the keyboard, is glowing solid green or blue. Confirm that the power adapter is plugged into the computer and into a wall outlet. Confirm that battery indicator light is glowing solid green or blue. Hold down the "Fn" key. Press the up-arrow to see if the screen brightness increases.
Some computers also use the "F6" or "F7" keys to increase screen brightness.
Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the laptop.
Remove the AC adapter from the computer, close the screen, and then turn the PC over.
Slide the battery latch to eject the battery. Pull the battery out of its compartment. Turn the computer back over, open the lid, and insert the edge of a flathead screwdriver or other flat, solid object beneath the bezel above the keyboard. Wedge the edge of the keyboard bezel off of the top cover.
Work your way along the edge of the keyboard bezel to loosen it.
Pull the bezel off the laptop.
Trace the cable coming from the laptop screen to the connector found beneath the bezel. Reconnect the display cable to the motherboard if the cable has come loose from the connector. Line up the tabs on the bezel with the slots along the top of the keyboard. Insert the right edge of the bezel into the gap above the keyboard, and then push the bezel back in place. Turn the computer back on. If the laptop screen is still blacked out, connect an external monitor to the video port on the side of the PC to confirm that the video card isn't defective. If the external monitor works, the LCD screen could be broken. If the monitor doesn't work, the motherboard or video card might need to be replaced. Hope this helps

I accidently hit recall on my monitor settings. I now have a smaller veiwing screen with black edges

You didn't say which OS you're using but it sounds like you've changed the aspect ratio of your video signal. Different screen resolutions have somewhat different aspect ratios. The aspect ratio indicates the ratio of the number of pixels of width to those of height. For example: my video driver offers a resolution of 1280 x 960 or 1280 x 720 which would give screen aspect ratios of 1280/960 = 1.33 :1 and 1280/720 = 1.77 : 1. The latter would produce a narrower image. You can compensate somewhat by increasing your horizontal sweep voltage with your monitor menu. A better solution would be to select a resolution that more closely matches your monitor's screen size.

My computer screen is smaller then the monitor. There is about an inch of black surrounding the screen. It was displaying fine yesterday with my current set up but i had to do the factory restore thing and...

First make sure dispplay screen resolution is set to 1024*768 .
For that go to start ->control panel->display->setings set screen resolution to 1024*768 then apply .
If it is already set to 1024*768 then press menu button of monitor and increase horizontal and vertical position also put the picture in center first then increase both H and V position then it will give good display.
Also make sure display driver installed and working fine.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Width increases a bit on lowering and incresing resolution

Hence my earlier suggestion of lowering the resolution, it was actually a test.

Now we are getting somewhere. Yoke is definitely out, opposing diode pair is also out. The remote chance of the horizontal sync/oscillator is also out. That leaves us only with a possible resistor that has gone up in value (or is open) (least likely) and/or a capacitor (most likely) that has leaked, bulged or whose capacitance has gone down.

Perhaps a service manual would be of more help.

Good luck.

Screen width unadjustable

Most likely width control circuit has developed a problem. Most common causes are a failed diode in the yoke return circuit or open capacitor near the flyback.
