Dark stripe down left edge of screen. Starts out only an inch or two wide but over 3-4 months grows to more than 4 inches wide.

We had the product serviced under warranty and they replaced the light engine. Now less than 9 months later it is coming back again.

    SAMSUNG HL-R6168W:

I have the same problem---dark shadow about an inch wide running along the left screen from top to bottom.

I had this after three months of having the TV (New) I had it done under warranty and they replaced the whole light engine including the DLP chip, the repairman told me they had an issue with the clips holding down the mirrors (DLP Chip). Thus the clip is casting a shadow on one edge of the screen, mine was on the right. They resolved the issue.

So you know, I myself am having this very same issue. Basically, your light engine tunnel needs to be fixed or replaced. I just (5 minutes ago) called Samsung who told me that I would need the serial number and to call them back to be escalated to their corporate support, who may or may not help me with the charges incurred from fixing my 18 month old TV. Since you are out of warranty like me, I would advise calling Samsung to see if they can at the very least assist you in paying for the fix, as this can cost anywhere from $400 to $600.

Dark shadow

Uh Oh! Your light engine is warping a little from overheating and is distorting the picture. It usually means replacing the light engine.

My suggestion to you is to get on the phone with Samsung and start complaining, then keep complaining until they agree to pay for it. You may have to get the problem diagnosed by a pro before they agree to pay for it though.
Hope ya fix it!

Dark band on left side, Samsung HL-R5668W

the reflecting mirror is likely loose and falling down inside the light reflecting tube. you should have seen the band getting darker and larger,
the small mirror is in front of the lamp and bends the light,
remove the lamp and look down the tube (light path)

Don't recommend replacing the light tunnel if you never had any experience with DLP optical systems. you need to pay careful attention to the way you remove any screws or you will be forced disassembling the engine multiple time to get the alignment correctly.

Dlp problem

The unit has a defective light tunnel contained within the light engine. This part is not easily replaced and you will a qualified tech to replace it. Many service centers condemn the light engine at a much hight cost. Do not buy or let someone tell you the light engine must be replaced. This repair requires only the light tunnel.
