Windows Vista will not start up

By Jerrytaff on Apr 29, 2009

" "
After starting the computer, I keep getting a blue screen flashing up saying:

''A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you have seen this screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or back-up utilities, check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.
Technical information ***STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190444,0x870B9ee8,0xC0000102,0x00000000)
Any ideas what I can do? I have done all the F8 options - it just shuts down after the same blue screen.

- Yes, I have a recovery disc, but the disc drive will not function. It stops after 2 seconds. I should tell you this problem occured when automatic updates were being made to the computer. It froze on update one and after one hour I switched it off manually. Then this problem came.

You might possibly have a bad hard drive. When you turn on the computer, does it go directly to the blue screen, or do you get the splash screen first?

What is the make/model of your laptop? Occasionally there is a combination of keys that must be pressed in order for it to boot off of the CD drive.

Do you have the original disks that came with the laptop? If so, there's probably a system restore disk included. Insert that disk, and turn on the computer. It'll walk you through the process of restoring your system back to factory defaults.

Please have a look at this link to see MS's recommendations for startup problems in vista.
And since you can't even get it booted at the moment, see here for an explanation of that 0x...24 error code, which indicates a problem with the file system driver or the drive itself. You will need to run the chkdsk utility from a recovery disk or recovery console to determine this.
It's possible that since your optical drive is not functioning, that the driver for that drive is causing the problem, but if you don't have the recovery console installed and can't run a recovery disk, you may have to take it to a shop just to get it booted on another hard drive. (see similar discussion here)
There is a hotfix available for systems that receive this error code, see here
Because there is a hotfix available, you might be able to get Microsoft support for this problem by following the hotfix link in that last link.
Good luck.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Here's to to restore your laptop. Keep in mind that this will most likely delete everything off your hard drive and restore it to factory defaults.

If you choose not to restore your system, I would recommend taking it to a local computer repair shop.

The procedure is as follows.
1. Turn off the computer.
2. While holding the F8 key, turn on the computer.
3. The Advanced Boot Options menu will be displayed. Use the arrow keys to select Repair Your Computer and press ENTER. 4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
