Black screen after 1/2 second power-up of Sony SDM-HS73

My grandaughter has a black screen and green power light within about 1/2 second of powering on the SDM-HS73 monitor. She had a green screen with a loose cable to he PC and she tightened and checked cables. I also checked the cable and disconected power tro the monitor for 20 seconds. Picture is good for a moment whenever power is toggled. Monitor is about 4 to 5 years old. I checked screen saver (10 minutes and set for pipes). I updated default driver from CD. No luck. Did see a waiting icon for a moment when screen saver would have displayed and scrren saver was there on power toggle wiew (the viewing moment). Ran anti-virus also. Nothing bad is obvious at the PC. It seems to be a problem in the monitor itself, such as power save kicking in immediately.

Thanks Bratty. I assume you mean the monitor power supply. I will open it and check the capacitor.

I have the same problem, Bratty, do you have any pics on which one it is?

    Thanks,

I have a similar problem as JerryD. My monitor is 3 and 1/2 years old with less than 1500 hours in use. Starting a couple of days ago my monitor when switched on does power on with green light staying, however it will show only a moment (maybe 1/10th of a second) of image on the screen. If it is not connected to a pc and it is switch on then the image that will show is kind of short red, green and maybe yellow lines appearing on the screen but only for about 1/10th of a second. I have tried Sony's recommendation and of course that does not fix it. All connections appear okay. Nothing that maybe overheating can be sensed. Does anyone out there have any solution? Help and thanks. NestorFMF

Bratty, do you have a pic on which capacitor this is? Also where I can find a replacement one.

My monitor is doing the same thing, nice and bright for 1/2 a sec then goes super dull, you can barley see anything.

Thanks,
Jake

Even after you replace the cap it still wont be fixed because the bad cap overpower the to transistors these also need to be replaced the number is something like c7506 they wont take more power for long so these will most likely all so be bad depending on manifacture date the transister part numbers do change.but are close to that. I repair these lcd problems alot in my computer shop.

I had the same problem, it was the capacitor in my power supply. Replaced the bulging capacitor and bingo, monitor is working great.

Monitor picture comes on for only 1 second and then it is blank (black) Color bars appear to be OK (for that second) when running the Self-diagnosis function.

timothy henr, Do you understand how the new screw-in, curlie-Q, energy efficient, CFL light bulbs generate white light?? You will when you find out just what makes the WHITE fixya background on this web page you are looking at!!! Black screen of death can strike at any time!! Do a reply when finished with your research of repair video clips at YOUTUBE. Your search terms are: "lcd monitor disassembly" and "lcd monitor repair." That should get you started. Your unit could have a "switch-mode-power-supply" that detects a problem with itself or another circuit and goes into "full" or "partial" shutdown mode. You should be able to tell the difference if you shine a bright flashlight 1 inch from screen when it goes black!! Partial=still see win-desktop. Full shutdown=no see desktop!!! What wil you do??? Fix or just trade up for new display?? 12fixlouie

Sony sdm-hs73p LCD blacks out

Common problem in the HS73/93 is bad soldering works in the lamp assemblies, see my pictures here:

But look for bad caps (leaking/bulging top) first in the power supply section.

Sony SDM HS73 ''turns off''

One thing I know for sure on this model HS73/HS93 is that the backlight assemblies failed due to poor soldering works. This may the problem with your monitor.

It is very time consuming repair works that I doubt very much if repair shop will do the work.

No input signal, go to power save sony sdm-hs93

I f you see the message on the screen indicating 'NO INPUR SIGNAL', you need to check the VGA cable and both ends of the connectors also. Try this monitor with other PC also.

This SDM-HS73/93 have common problem: bad backlight assemblies due to poor workmanship in sodlering works, see my pictures below. You should also inspect the caps. This is not recommend for DIY.

My sdm-hs73 moniter the power is on but screen is blank, what could be wrong

First check brightness and contrast settings.
If all good could either be your lcd back light has gone or the inverter. To check if its the black light shine a torch through the back of the screen to see if you can see a slight image on it, if you cant see anything the inverter board is faulty and to repair needs to be changed.

Sony Monitor ... SOMEONE HELP, please!

Thanks for your response. I actually sent my monitor out to guy that does LCD repairs for cheap. He changed out the video board and did repairs similar to yours but still couldn't get the monitor to work. After some more testing, he found that one of the chips that contained Sony's proprietary firmware had gone bad and said there really was no way to replace the chip. It definitely seems like we had the same problem, so I thought this information may help. I'm sorry that you paid so much for repairs that didn't solve the problem.
