AW-G170A Hello, I have tried to burn dvd-r and dvd+r medias with k3b on a linux machine. It seems like it keeps failing at one moment or another during the burning. It succeded only once, on a dvd+r media, but then, I count tens of failures. What I see in the log is that : 1. System 2. ----------------------- 3. K3b Version: 1.0.3 4. 5. KDE Version: 3.5.6 6. It doesn't seem that it's related to the burner only, but I do not see how to fix the whole situation. Thank you for your help.

Actually I did found out a solution.

Most of the IDE burners need to be set as secondary, master, in order to avoid CRC errors or failures during the burning. In linux, it would be /dev/hdc so.

When I did that, I could burn again the dvds without any failure. There was an "hesitation" at the same point at the last time (where it always failed), but then, the burnfree perfectly worked and went through.

I hope this helps a little bit.

The only way to get rid off this problem is "throw your dvd-r/w in street garbage collector can". :-)

Ok I have a Gateway Laptop model NV73A06u and it is not powering on. The computer is no booting up correctly. I tries to start and then fails. The computer tries to fix itself for a long time and nothing...

Have you tried a Live CD?

Since you have a newer model, you can try the latest Ubuntu release located here.

Download the .iso file.

Burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD.

For burning .iso files to media, I like ImgBurn for Windows ( ) and plain K3B for Linux.

Once the disk is burned, pop it in and make your machine boot from the Optical Drive (CD/DVD Drive).

Hit enter a few times once you are asked about the preferred language and to try Ubuntu without changes to your computer.

From there it should either boot up okay (maybe without sound because sound is iffy in Linux) or it will continue to be all kinds of badness.

The thing is at this point you should be able to tell if it is most likely hardware or software. If Linux boots up off of your disk, your Windows installation is hosed (not so bad, possibly cheap to fix). If you can't even boot into a Linux live environment, then the fix may involve money and a fair amount of screwdriver action.

you might want to try and update the firmware on the DVD burner, find out with the vendor if there is a fw version and how to do it, if not I would suggest hiring a professional.

This is a problem with the DVD Writer model. SONY DVD RW AW-G170a has problems reading DVD+/- R/RW Discs. But there is no problem with any of the DVD+/- R/RW Dual Layer, DVD Ram or CD+/- R/RW Discs. It is the reason that this DVD Writer lacks the correct bitsetting for DVD+/- R/RW Discs. There is nothing else you could do other than replacing the wirter with some other model.

NEC-3520A Suddenly stop to burn correctly, but reads OK

Have you tried lowering the burn/erase speed? To begin, simply do what you need to do on the lowest speed, and then keep increasing until it gives the error again. This will most likely work. I had this problem and I burn now CDs at 16x.
