To restore them back, you can go to display properties, from control panel and change the resolution under the settings tab.

Or

Your monitor settings can be made right from the buttons available from the outer panel if that is the problem.

SOURCE: windows xp sp3 problem

Best answer is likely to uninstall and reinstall SP3. If it remains a problem, free support available from MS, as it is a Windows Update issue. Visit http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us for more info. Thanks for rating FixYa!

SOURCE: not shown desktop

If you right click on the desktop, and go to Properties, do you have a theme loaded? Make sure you have one of the standard windows themes.

Also, check the "Desktop" tab, and make sure you haven't set it to an all black wallpaper.

The volume control on the desk-bar. Please help! Thank you,

Hi, 'right' click on the Taskbar, that's on the same level as the 'start menu button," select the Properties Icon, once the window open; click the Notification Area. "In the next window, there will be a "list" of items that can be viewed, and added to the "Quick Launch" list, when the computer boots-up! In the list is the Volume. Select the (check box), and the 'volume' will be present on the "Taskbar," you can do the same for other items; to be shown, or hidden. "Did this solution help? If so Helpful Ratings Feedback, is appreciated, thanks paul7of9"

Hot to retrieve my desk top icons

OK what OS are you using..I am assuming Xp or Vista...I am assuming XP

These are desktop icons not system tray icons right...

This is for XP only if they are desktop icons...

To resolve this behavior, turn on the Show Desktop Icons feature:
  1. Right-click the desktop.
  2. Point to Arrange Icons By.
  3. Click Show Desktop Icons.
  4. If that didn't work go here:
