Laptop won't recognize dial up modem. I'm not sure if the small internal modem is all I need for dial up access, or if I need to get a PCMIA card. It's a Dell Insprion 2650 laptop. Thanks

If the internal modem is functional and the driver is installed, then that should be all you need for a dial up connection. If the modem is listed in device manager without a Yellow Exclamation Point then the driver is likely loaded properly. if it does have an exclamation point, then you may need to load the driver. There were 3 different modem models shipped with that system.

If installing drivers doesn't resolve, then a PCMCIA modem is a inexpensive option

My laptop as 5534-1096 did't recognise the modem

Hello pothapalu,

Assuming this is NOT a dsl or cable modem, try the following:

The modem settings can be managed from the control panel as follows:
•Click Start (lower left-hand of screen)
•Select Control Panel
•Click Phone and Modem Options
•Select the Modem Tab
•Select the Modem Name and click properties.
•Check the properties settings and make sure the Modem is enabled and working ok.
-Device Status should be: 'This device is working properly.'

Also, review the other tabs in the properties page (General - Modem - Diagnostics - Advanced - Driver - Details).

Make a note of any setting before changing it.

If this solution is helpful please click a thumbs-up rating below.

Have a great day,

Do laptop computers have modems to connect with a dial up service

Yes, some laptops have a modem, some don't. Just make sure when you buy. You will probably want to know also if the modem supports data/fax.

Yes, the Toshiba A305-S6872 has a built in modem. It is the only port where you can plug in a phone line.

My laptop dont have internal modem i want to connect my laptop via external usb modem with existing telephone connection

Here is one source for a USB external modem. I do a lot of business with Tiger Direct and they are competitive and fast shipping. There are many other vendors as well. A google search for "USB external modem" will get you going.

I have a Fujitso S V5535 laptop. O/S VISTA. I cannot find a Modem / though there is an extl cable connection. Whenever I try to set up an Internet A/C it "says". "No Modem". How would I correct this?

Most laptops have a built-in modem and LAN card and have modem and LAN connectors on the side or rear of the laptop.
If you cannot detect or see your modem then the problem could be :-
Make sure you connect the phone cable into the phone connector (the narrower one) and not in the LAN connector on the laptop.
The problem could be :-
The modem driver was not installed or disabled.
1st - check to see if the modem was not disabled in the BIOS.
2nd - Go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - and check to see if there is a yellow ? against the modem device. If there is a ? then the modem driver was not installed.
Then install the modem driver.
If there isn't a ? against the modem make sure the modem is enabled.
If you still cannot resolve the problem, list what steps you have taken and any error messages and get back to me.

Internet connection through Internal modem in Laptop

Two solutions:
First for the more experienced:
find the modem on the underside of the laptop unscrew/ re-seat the modem, test, if it works great, if it doesn't try inserting foam, or paper between the modem and the "black case"... if you cant find the modem locate the manual for the laptop.

second (and possiblely the best)
Disable the onboard modem and replace it with a USB one

Dell latitude d800 laptop

The problem may be the modem has to assign an IP address to your laptop, what you may have to do is plug the laptop into the modem and see if the laptop recognizes the modem with no errors in device manager,

Next turn off the laptop and modem, reboot the laptop then modem for the modem to assign an IP address.
