hi i have an older sub-zero 700tc upper fridge lower 2 drawer freezer with 1 compressor, the problem:when there is a call for the compressor i only hear the fan motor turn on,to get the compressor going i have to manually shut the fuse for the fridge (from the main fusebox in the house)and then flip the fuse back on and the compressor will then operate, here is the funny thing,if i turn the fridge off using the red on /off switch located to the left of the compressor and then turn the switch back on the compressor goes on momentarily (2seconds) then shuts off and remains off (no fan,no compressor) ,,,but when i go to the main fuse box and flip the fuse off, then on, the fridge will then operate properly,,,any ideas?

- hello farfield,

that is very insightful and i will definetly check that breaker! i put a booster on the capacitor and after 24 hours (the compressor was cycling normally)but then the same circumstance happened that only the fan motor came on,so i reset the breaker again and it has been going fine for the past 6 days, right now there is a 15amp breaker,,,do you think that maybe i should replace it with a 20amp?i will try and see what the specs call for on the 700tc in terms of breaker amps..in the meantime thank you very much for your insightful response!

- hi farfield

the wiring is standard 14 gauge (all copper) and the length to the fridge is apx 30 feet,

the breaker box was replaced new in 1996 in a dry area and is moisture free the guts are dry, clean with no corrosion, meter is new from this year, and again your advice is exactly right,so i guess i have to stay at 15 amps or otherwise at 20amps the 14g wire will heat up to much before it trips the breaker.

(i have pretty good experience with wiring as i worked with a profesional electrician for over a year and he was very gracious in teaching me the trade)

however your point about the wire gauge and the amps of the breaker are again very insightful information on your part.

im very curious, let me ask you this, can a 20amp breaker be placed on 14g wire for use in a higher draw appliance such as a window air conditioner at lets say 8000 btu's, or in order to be safe the wire must be at least 12g before a 20amp and of course the proper equipment i.e 2500 watt baseboard heater can be considered?

at this point the fridge is still running perfect (9 days now) i still have not changed the 15amp breaker but i will (can't hurt)
again mr.farfield, thanks so much for your help and insight,it is greatly appreciated.

A check of your breaker is in order. From your description the breaker could be week. If so the breaker my not cut off all the way and still allow enough power through to opperate the fan but not the added load of the compressor.

I have seen this a few times and it always confuses me too. Check the circuit by maybe moving the circuit on the breaker to a different one then retry it and see if the problem is gone. If it is then replace the breaker if not then its time to use a volt meter or call a repair person. And this is because there are a lot of what ifs that have to be covered to get to the root of the problem if this is not the trouble..

Please lket me know whow this works out. Rate me as high as you can and thank you for using fixya.

- I recomend against up sizing the breaker until I know 2 things How long (in feet) is the wire, and what size is the wire?

15Amps is ok for up to 16, 14 gage or larger (12 is larger and 10 is larger still) any ga going larger is ok for 15 as long as it fits the lug on the breaker.
With 20 amps the length should be under 100 feet and the wire size is usually 10 gage or larger.

See, if your wire is smaller than your breaker the wire will burn out in an overload before tripping the breaker. At least thats why you should use larger wire size and to allow the circut to remain cool.

When you remove the breaker you may find the buss bars that the breaker connect to are corroded and the whole box may need to be changed or just the "guts". I recomend you have some expierance dealing with the electric company Also before pulling your meter off, in some cases if the seal is broken they can refuse to reconnect you.
(Or call a licensed electrician if you have limited expierance cleaning these type of connections and deffinately never clean tham while "hot").

- I would have to consult the National electral code for a good answer to your question. I believe 14 ga max amp rating is 15 amps. If you have 12 its ok up to 20A 10 up to 30amps. Now if these are 220v the ratings I believe for 12 can go up to 30 Amps. Again I would consilt an electrician or the NEC before making the safety larger.
