Seagate Hard drive can't find data

Hi, I have a Seagate external hard drive that has just started to cause trouble. Most times when I start it it seems to have no device drivers at all. Never had that before today - it used to just kick into an Autoplay thing and then i can see it on a window explorer. It has fired up kinda OK a couple of times but even then it can see all the folders and files but cannot access them or thinks they have disappeared. Harddrive is only about 18months old. Do I stand a chance of recovering whats on there? And how? Product code is ST3250824U2-RK. Thanks

Re: Seagate Hard drive can't find data

You have chance and the MOST effective way is to try some so-called data recovery software.

First of ALL - Connect your Seagate external hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem!

Re: Seagate Hard drive can't find data

I used a variation on the freezer trick to get all my data back, posted pictures and details here:

Is in no way guarenteed but might work especially if there's large amounts of data you need to recover.

Re: Seagate Hard drive can't find data

I'd copy files you want to save from that drive to another one quick!
Then run the seagate diagnostics on it.
My guess it's on it's way out.

How to recover you ask?
If you cant get it to read, put it in your freezer overnight, then connect it as soon as you take it out and if it reads, copy your files to another drive. This is a "sometimes" works thing. With hard drives on their way out there are no guarantees or for sures.

Thank you.

How to recove Seagate external hard drive data?

Probably, the new operating system cannot recognize your Seagate external hard drive. You can connect the Seagate external hard drive to another computer to copy data to another device. If the problem still exists, you might need to perform data recovery. You can free download the data recovery software:

Hard drives are easily damaged when dropped. The clicking noise is known as "The click of death".
This hard drive cannot be fixed. You need a new one.
If you need to recover data from this hard drive, then there are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Are you using Windows? If you are using Windows, go to Start => Programs => Accessories => System Tools => Backup. In the backup wizard that opens, choose which backup type you want and you can choose your backup destination. Choose your Seagate Expansion external drive for your backup location so that Windows can store an image of your current system into your external drive.

Cannot power on Seagate Freeagent Desk external hard drive

Hope this has only been used for backups, and not as a primary storage. The best way to trouble shoot something like this is to purchase a USB/SATA adapter. You will need to dissemble the device and take out the hard drive. Connect it to the USB/SATA adapter to see if the drive spins up and can be seen by the PC. This will let you know if the drive is OK and whether the fault is related to the external bay electrices or the drive itself.

Good luck, you can get the USB/SATA devices quite cheap off of eBay.
