Problem for Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens

Camera will not focus...makes screaching noise in auto mode

when i pput the camera into auto mode and compress the button to focus it makes a scratchy/grinding sound and does not focus. Any ideas? This occurs with all lenses.
