Question about Zanussi WJS1397W Front Load Washer / Dryer

1 Answer

Drum Bearings. I need to know how to replace the drum bearings on my WJS1397 washer/drier. As far as i can make out, this is a difficult job best left to proffessionals. However, money is not abundant at the moment (we will struggle to find the money for the part on its own!!!) and this isnt the first time ive ferteled with this washer, so i must do this job myself. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Drum Bearings.

I recommend first of all ordering a repair manual. Or at least see if the parts come with detailed instructions on how to take out the old and install the new. You will probably have to replace the entire outer drum assembly. It's much more expensive in parts to do it that way than to just replace the bearings and seals, but much much easier and faster. Personally, I've replaced the entire drum assembly and also tried to replace just the bearings and seals. In the end I wasted the money on the bearings and seals and got an new assembly. I'd recommend just going for the new assembly and saving time.

Bearing replacement

One of the biggest jobs to do on a washing machine. Remove the drum from the machine, remove the washer drum, knock out bearings, replace drum spider (shaft) fit the new bearings, and drum seal, put everything back together again. Job for a experienced engineer.

Hotpoint wma46 drum bearing failed

The drum sits on a shaft, just like the front wheel on a car. There are 2 bearings, one each side of the drum housing. Usually the inner bearing water seal fails and the bearings begin to rust, causing it to become noisy. Once the water is that far, its not long until the outer bearing goes. At some time in the process, you will begin to get a water leak from the rear of the drum that will get progressively worse.

You can change the bearings and I work with professionals who claim that they can have a drum out, bearings swapped and back in within 45 minutes. I've never got it down below an hour and a half on a machine I know well and you will need, if not SPECIAL tools, then a tool of some description to knock out the old bearings that are pressed into the drum. This is a job for the hardened DIY enthusiast and a pig of a job if you've never done it before.

Bearing sets cost (depending on the machine, the supplier and how many you buy) around £25 in the UK (About $40). Calling out a guy to do the job will easily quadruple that cost (He will probably come with a refurbished drum, swap it out and then take yours away to refurbish).

With this information, you now have to ask yourself if it's worth the effort on a machine that may be reaching end of life anyway.

Typically, the noise will get SCARY and the water leak annoying long before the machine actually fails to work. My advice would be take this as notice that your machine is about to go to the scrap yard in the sky and start looking for a replacement before it croaks on you at an inappropriate moment.

Ultima extra wma64 drum is loose and rattling

Your bearings have broken up in the drum. This is a very difficult DIY fix since it involves stripping the front from the machine, taking out the drup assembly, splitting it, knocking the centre spindle free and then knocking out the machine pressed bearings and replacing them.

It CAN be done by an ameture. I do it occasionally when I am repairing machines and I constantly moan about the fact that I really need to build or buy a tool to knock the bearing out. Despite the fact that the new bearings will cost about £20 ($30) ish, this is a nightmare job. Your local repair man will probably come and fit a refurbished drum for you (Then take yours away and refurbish that for his stock when he has time).

If you have never done anything like this, my best advice is that this is NOT the time to start!

Get a quote, then decide if you want the machine repaired, or to go buy a new one I'm afraid

My partner's Hotpoint WT960 makes very loud grinding sound when spinning. I suspect the drum bearings are gazacked. Do I need to change the drum support and bearings & seal or just the bearings? Is it...

Hi Joe.
A lot depends on construction of drum.
Remove the top cover and look at the plastic outer container, if it is a one piece consonstruction, then unfortunately you cannot fit new bearings, as it it comes supplied as a complete unit.
However, if you can see the 2 drum halves held together with screws, then you can fit new bearings.
You will not know if the spider or drum shaft needs to be replaced until the it is stipped down, a fifty- fifty chance
It is an involved repair as it entails removing the whole container from the cabinet, and do not fit any other bearings than the genuine ones.
It comes as a bearing and seal kit from Hotpoint.

Good luck

Noisy bearing while spinning

The seal in the drum has failed allowing water to leak into the bearings causing them to rust. Once the bearings are no longer round, the bearing noise will get louder. To replace, the washer needs to be taken apart and the drum needs to be removed in order to replace the bearings. Can be a difficult and expensive repair. Get a few estimates before deciding whether it is worth reparing. Sorry.

Hotpoint wd420

if the drum is tight to turn ,then the main bearings have probably seized, or their could be something fast in the drum. Remove belt, and try to turn the drum by hand , it shuold be free with no resitance.
If it is noisy or feels rough, then the bearings have gone.

Try lifting the inner drum to check if there is any movement between the inner and outer drums, also turn the drum and listen for any grinding or scraping sound from the rear of the drum. Its possible that your bearings have gone out & need to be replaced. The job is far from easy.

Drum will not rotate

im confused as to why you think no drum rotation would be caused by bearings. typically worn bearings would cause noisy spin. only if bearings were completely seized would that cause no drum rotation. can you rotate drum by hand? if so bearings are not seized. can you hear motor rotate when you select spin? if not, then likely cause is motor brushes. do these simple tests and get back to me if you want. and bearings are quite difficult to replace on this machine
