CPU Upgrade Help Compaq M700

Hi there! I want to upgrade a Compaq M700 with standard 64MB Ram and 462MHz P3 CPU to a 1000MHz P3 or Celeron CPU and 512MB Ram. Ram i know i have to get SO-SDRam with 100MHz in 2 pieces of 256MB but i am not sure about the CPU. I don't know which CPU i should get because i don't know which type of P3 CPU i am allowed to insert on a Compaq M700. I have seen a lot of M700 with 850MHz P3 on eBay but never one with 1.0GHz. Which type of P3 should i post that is 100% compatible with a Compaq M700? By that i mean which Sockel and how many MHz are possible? Thank you so much for your kind Help.

    Another Question:
I found a sockel 478 Pentium 3 M with 1 GHz, are those the right ones for this Laptop?

  • Picas Oct 02, 2007

No they don't say anything about which Socket it uses but i know it's Pentium 3 Mobile so, i assume any Pentium M Mobile will do right? And Thanks once again!

All M700 CPUs are SMT (Surface Mounted Technology) = soldered onboard. You have to replace the whole mobo if you wanna upgrade. Suggest you get the whole bottom piece from eBay - easiest way for upgrade!

The mobo also has a VR sub-board which I was told is different between PII->PIII 500mhz, PIII 600mhz -> PIII 750mhz, and PIII 800mhz-> PIII 1Ghz. So better replace the entire lower piece - lowerfixer.

I want to upgrade my hpdv1000 pentium M processor whats the maximum upgrade allowed for this? i have upgraded it to 2gb ram from 512mb and 250gb hd from 60gb and its doin fine.

You should be able to upgrade the CPU, since it seems that the DV1000's motherboard uses a socket CPU design. But, obviously, HP would rather have you choose the CPU that you want from the beginning and stick with it.
The first thing to do is to check HP website to see what other configurations were/are sold for your model. If they sell it with faster CPUs then you can upgrade to one of them...

In order for a particular processor to be compatible with a particular laptop:
(1) the processor must be physically compatible with the laptop socket, in your case I thing you have a Soket 479 processor
(2) the laptop chipset must support the processor.
(3) the chipset front side bus speed must match the processor front side bus speed, in your case 400Mhz.
(4) the laptop BIOS must support the processor.

So I listed here processors with FSB at 400Mhz, I gues that DV1000 as a 855GM Motherboard that supports only 400Mhz with Socket 479

Upgrading my compaq evo d51s

A ram upgrade could help, however you may need to think about upgrading your CPU also. First check if you can upgrade your CPU. Your best option may be to upgrade to a new computer altogether.

you could only upgrade the processor and RAM in this condition i.e.

you can only change your an upgraded p-III processor like 1.0 GHz, 1.1 GHz or 1.3GHz and
upgrade the RAM by changing to 256 in each slot.

that is all what u can do with ur pc

Upgrade the processor on a Toshiba equium l40 series from a celron M

The core2 duo chips will be a different socket to your celeron cpu so can do that unfortunately. You may be able to upgrade to a faster cpu of the same socket type but will probably need a bios update for it to run at proper speed.

Unfortunately laptops arent really designed to be upgraded at all bar extra ram/hd/dvdrw.

Hope that helps?

So the Socket 478 pinned pentium is not suitable. Advise: Try to exchange it with a new laptop or buy a used laptop for suitabl configuration

Compaq M700 Ram Upgrade the second

i can find no spec on this but,if your notebook can take upt 576MB of memory, i would expect 2 x 256MB to be the max, as installing 1 x 512MB would be doubling the capacity allowed by one module slot.
