The agitator won't move during the washing cycle and the it will not dispense the softener. When the machine is off you can spin the agitator freely with your hand.

- I've replaced the 'dogs' in my agitator but can't figure out which way is up etc to reinstall it. they tech who put the dogs in didn't allow me to see how he took it apart and now he's too dumb to put it back together correctly. Can you help? - yanci_morganDec 16, 2008
- I have the same problem with my Kenmore 80 series washer. The upper agitator will not spin, but the lower agitator spins fine. I hear clicking noises and turns easily by hand. How do you remove the upper agitator to replace the broken part "agitator dogs"? I tried removing with no luck. Where would you purchase replacement parts. Thanks.Norm - nan_g

- I have a whirlpool top load washing machine. The agitator is in two pieces.The base turns fine but the top dosent move. Several months ago we had a problem with it and I replaced installed the agitator dog repair kit. Thought everything was ok. Now it wont agitate again. Do I need to replace the top part of the agitator that the dogs go in. The parts house said I didnt but Im not to sure about that.

There are gears inside the agitator that are very cheap and relatively easy to change they are called agitator dogs.

the base of the agitater works with machine the softner part spins by hand freely both ways

The agitator started making a noise like it was slipping and now only works intermittently. It will spin freely by hand clockwise and will turn counterclockwise by hand without much resistance.
