Question about Canon Selphy DS700 InkJet Photo Printer

Selphy DS700: False paper jam message and poor print quality

My new DS700 started by having very poor print quality - stains across picture, blotchy ink dots etc.as if ink release is not controlled properly. The print head and cartridge were new and sealed (as uspplied in box) It then stopped working and gave a "paper jam" message when nothing was jammed. The paper seems to shoot too far out the back and is not pulled forward for printing. Canon say it could be a sensor so I looked but could see nothing. After this it worked about 10 times OK except for the totally rubbish print quality. After a total of about 20 prints all the ink has now gone. Furthermore, the "paper jam" problem has come back!

    Will try tomorrow and let you know if this fixes paper feed problem.

    Meanwhile, any ideas about the print quality problem - it looks as if there is not enough control over ink-spray.

    Hi again - wonderful quick response!

    I am running Windows Vista 32 bit but problem occurs even when using direct CF card insertion into printer. Cartridge is the one supplied with the printer (BCI-16) - new in sealed package. Printer head was also sealed and I had to fit according to maker's instructions - hope I did it right!

    Hi again

    Vacuuming seems to have worked - have printed 2 prints OK so hopefully that is sorted; I shall know next time. I still have major print problems - as I said, it has used up a whole ink cartridge in 20 prints.

    I shall send a print which shows the awful dull effect with smudges running across it.

    Sorry - had not meant to close our dialogue; I clicked the Accept button thinking this would go on to the Live Chat you suggested.

    I did the deep clean and head alignment as you suggested but it does not seem any better (although I am now completely our of ink until my new cartridges (on order) arrive.

    I did a test print of text (picture attached) which shows the Windows emblem OK in colour but smudges from the black text. It is as if there is little control over the black print although the text is still readable and quite clear in places.

    Any ideas about cause of blotches/ink runs? Could the cartridge or print head be faulty?

    When I open the top hatch, the print head stops just too far to the left to allow the print head to be removed although the ink cartridge can be taken out. Is this normal?

1.Sir Please have a vacuum cleaner with you and clean the area where the paper is being pulled in thus the sensor will be clear 2.if your problem isnt yet resolved please post your Windows here i will assisst you further

    Instructions for Windows Vista:
    1. Go To Control Panel,
    2. Then Click Hardwares and Sound
    3. Click Printers
    4. right Click your Printer--->Properties
    5. Maintainance Tab--->Deep Cleaning

For Paper jam:
• Press
(BACK) to eject the paper.
If the paper is not ejected, turn the power off and turn it on again. If the printer fails to eject the paper, contact a Canon Customer Support center for assistance. Poor prints and paper jams


Sounds like you probably need a new fuser. Smearing is a good indicator of the fuser not getting the toner to fuse to the paper, also, if it is jamming a lot near where the paper enters the fuser, there is a good chance there is some damage on the fuser unit itself.

I get paper jam notice, remove jam and restart. There is no paper jam,when I try to print only half of picture prints


Make sure there is plenty of room behind the printer, the paper is drawn in the front and sticks all the way out of the back before it starts printing, it will show a jam if it can't get all the way out of the back slot.

Blotchy prints


First, make sure your print cartridges are aligned by going to your printer software and printing out an alignment page. Secondly, adjust your printer software/properties to make sure your printing to your best photo quality. Third and most important, make sure you have the right kind of printer paper, which is probably the main reason that your page is blotchy.


Another reason its blotchy would be if the printer was not a good one.

Poor Printer Quality


If you have the old drum put it back in and see what happens to the copy. if is better, then yu may have a bad new drum. They do have them. Poor copy quality is normally drum or toner in these Brothers. This model is an excellent machine by the way.
