How to retrieve Cisco router password without losing configuration?

Need help to recover the forgotten password of your Cisco router? The following guide will help you restore the password without losing your router configuration. To retrieve the password, you will require rebooting your router many times. It means stoppage, but it is the best step to reset the password. At first, you need to connect the first end of the standard light blue cable to the power port and the other end to the 'Console' port on the back of your router. After connecting the devices, you need to make a serial connection to the router. For that, you need the following settings:

Baud: 9600
Parity: No
Data bits: 8
Stop bits: 1
Flow Control: None

To recover the Cisco router password, check the following steps:-

1.Restart your Cisco router and press the 'Break' key to conflict the boot order. Input config 0x2142. It conveys the router to avoid NVRAM in the boot process. It won't load your current configuration.

2.Enter reset to restart your router. When asked to run the setup process, choose 'No.' Enter 'Copy Start, Run.' It loads the beginning setup into memory.

3.Now, if you enter the 'Show Run Config,' it will show you the router settings. Also, you should consider that the router name is in the prompt rather than the default 'Router.'

4.Type the 'enable secret new password' to change the enabled secret, and then enter the 'config-register 0x2102' to modify the registry settings back to 0x2102.

5.Once your router restarts, it will load the old settings along with the new password. Now, you need to save it so that it will continue during restarts.

6.Enter copy run start. Type Reload at the prompt to reboot the Cisco router.

Now, note down the password to keep them safe. However, if the steps as given above fail to recover the Cisco router password without losing the configuration or you need the help of experts, you can call on the genuine Cisco customer care number listed on the Contactforhelp to get the direct support of experts for recovering the password quickly.

I forgot a password and i cant access a catalyst 2960 24-port 10/10

You can only reset password this way:
1.
Attach a terminal or PC with terminal emulation (for example, Hyper Terminal) to the console port of the switch.
Use the following terminal settings:
  • Bits per second (baud): 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow Control: Xon/Xoff
2.Unplug the power cable.
3. Hold down the mode button located on the left side of the front panel, while you reconnect the power cable to the switch
4. Release the Mode button when the SYST LED blinks amber and then turns solid green. When you release the Mode button, the SYST LED blinks green.
5. switch: flash_init
6. switch: load_helper
7. switch: dir flash:
8. switch: rename flash:config.text flash:config.old
Rename config.text to config.old. In that file the password is stored.
9. switch: boot
10. Enter "n" at the prompt to abort the initial configuration dialog
11. Type en to enable
12. Switch#rename flash:config.old flash:config.text
13. Switch#copy flash:config.text system:running-config
14. Overwrite the current passwords:
conf term
enable secret <new pass>
enable password <new pass>
line vty 0 15
password <new pass>
login
line con 0
password <new pass>

15. write memory
16. copy run start

I have forgotten my passwork to my wireless cisco linksys E3000, how do I go about retrieving it?

he WEP key is defined by the person who set your wireless router up. You will not be able to find out what the WEP key is, but you CAN change it if you have physical access to the router. If you are trying to connect to your wireless router and can't remember the WEP, then walk over to the router and on the back or bottom of it is a small little hole that you can fit a pen or paper clip into. Press the paper clip into the little hole for 10 seconds and release. This will reset all the settings on your router back to default and will allow you to access your wireless connection.

Note: doing this will take away all of your wireless security so make sure that you know what you're doing before messing with it!

Thanks and please rate if this helps you at all :).

Hi i have 1841 router what is the default user name password for this i tryed with user name passowrd as cisco but is saying that no user cisco pls help me

  • Follow these steps in order to recover your password:
    1. Attach a terminal or PC with terminal emulation to the console port of the router.
      Use these terminal settings:
      • 9600 baud rate
      • No parity
      • 8 data bits
      • 1 stop bit
      • No flow control
    2. If you can access the router, type show version at the prompt, and record the configuration register setting.
Note: The configuration register is usually set to 0x2102 or 0x102. If you can no longer access the router (because of a lost login or TACACS password), you can safely assume that your configuration register is set to 0x2102.
    3. Use the power switch in order to turn off the router, and then turn the router back on.
      Important Notes:
      • In order to simulate this step on a Cisco 6400, pull out and then plug in the Node Route Processor (NRP) or Node Switch Processor (NSP) card.
      • In order to simulate this step on a Cisco 6x00 with NI-2, pull out and then plug in the NI-2 card.
    4. Press Break on the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the router into ROMMON.
If the break sequence does not work, refer to Standard Break Key Sequence Combinations During Password Recovery for other key combinations.
    5. Type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt in order to boot from Flash.
This step bypasses the startup configuration where the passwords are stored.
    6. Type reset at the rommon 2> prompt.
The router reboots, but ignores the saved configuration.
    7. Type no after each setup question, or press Ctrl-C in order to skip the initial setup procedure.
    8. Type enable at the Router> prompt.
You are in enable mode and should see the Router# prompt.
    9. Type configure memory or copy startup-config running-config in order to copy the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) into memory.
Important: Do not type copy running-config startup-config or write. These commands erase your startup configuration.
    10. Type show running-config.
The show running-config command shows the configuration of the router. In this configuration, the shutdown command appears under all interfaces, which indicates all interfaces are currently shut down. In addition, the passwords (enable password, enable secret, vty, console passwords) are in either an encrypted or unencrypted format. You can reuse unencrypted passwords. You must change encrypted passwords to a new password.
    11. Type configure terminal.
      The hostname(config)# prompt appears.
    12. Type enable secret password> in order to change the enable secret password. For example:
      hostname(config)#enable secret cisco
    13. Issue the no shutdown command on every interface that you use.
If you issue a show ip interface brief command in privilege EXEC mode, every interface that you want to use should display up up. For example:
      Router#show ip interface brief
    14. Type config-register configuration_register_setting>. Where configuration_register_setting is either the value you recorded in step 2 or0x2102 . For example:
      hostname(config)#config-register 0x2102
    15. Press Ctrl-z or end in order to leave the configuration mode.
      The hostname# prompt appears.
    16. Type write memory or copy running-config startup-config in order to commit the changes.

Cisco 857 router

You might need to reset the password. In order to do this, follow these directions:

  1. Console into the router, then power cycle it. As its rebooting hit the "break | pause" button on your keyboard, and you get to the rommon1> prompt.
  2. Then type rommon1>confreg 2142 rommon2>reset
  3. The router comes back on as if it were new---answer no to the first question, and sometimes it asks a second question (do you want to terminate autoinstall, or something...)---answer yes to the secondquestion if it asks. Then hit enter and you get router> in a few seconds.
  4. Then router>en router#copy start run

create a new account:
  1. router#conf t
  2. router(config)#username bob priv 15 password bob
set register back:
  1. router(config)#confreg 0x2102
  2. router(config)#exit
  3. router#wr
  4. router#reboot

and that should let you login with bob/bob
