A/C compressor on a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0 V8 not engaging.

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0 V8. With the a/c knob on, the compressor does not engage. I've checked the fuses and they're all good. Should I just replace the relay since I do not know how to check it? Would the improper amount of freon prevent the compressor from engaging?

TY for the advise. I've filled the a/c with apprx 12-15 oz (40-45 psi) of R134A. While in the process, the compressor turned on and off continously. What does this mean?

Low pressure in the system and the clutch will not engage. The low pressure sensor is on it for a reason.

Check refrigrant level i have found that if the pressure is low the compressor will not engage. usually means that you have a leak. if yopu regharge the system and after a day you lose cool air you probabnly have a really bad leak mech time

What does the ide cables look like in a 1998 ford explorer

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but you do not have an idle cable. You have an IAC valve. That's assuming you have the 4.0 v6. The XLT and one version of the Eddie Bauer package came with the v8.

Where is the map sensor located

I don't list a map sensor for that model.
I do list a MASS sensor which measures air flow between the air filter and the throttle body.

4wd not engaging no indicater lgt basicaly no 4wd

I had a prolem with my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT. The 4wd indicator light would randomly start to blink while moving and when I flipped the switch to 4wd hi or low it would engage but easily disengage and the indicator lights would not come on. I was hearing a grinding sound coming from my hubs so I replaced both front hub assemblies and the light stopped blinking and 4wd hi/low works great now. it was about 300 bucks for the hub assemblies and only took me an hour or two to change.
