Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive
My WD My Book (world Edition) only stays online for less than a day. It is only a month and a half old. To get it to be recognized by the Mionet software (WD's newly aquired company)I must power it down and then back up. When I go to access it later in the night, it is again offline. I have emailed WD twice and have NEVER gotten a reply (Over 1.5 weeks) Thank you
Is your drive warm/hot like mine was/is ?
Mine dropped offline 2 or 3 times a week.
Put a small fan blowing on it.... been up for two weeks now.

My 1TB version was working great up until last week. This was when I moved my computer setup across the room.
After that I was having the hard drive drop off the network quite often, while downloading, watching a movie from it etc.. I would have to unplug and restart it and all would work for a few hours.
I tried upgrading the firmware with no change, in fact I think that caused it to go offline faster.
I decided to spend some time to investigate and noticed that the AC adapter also fits in my cable modem. I swapped them around and my hartd rive has not gone offline since.
I must have mixed the two AC's up during the move. Atleast I don't have to go buy another HD....
Check this before you try anything else.

I have a My World Book II 1 TB
Same issues. I have MAC and PC clients and this piece of **** keeps dropping off the network! i should have just bought some cheap chinese **** - at least i would have expected these headaches. I am probably going to remove the two 500 gig HDs and put them in some enclosures. I can't believe the might WD released such a shoddy product.

Hi to all.
I've found this in linuxquestions.org .
You may have ssh access to your WD My Book World edition and login (login is all in uppercase) and execute as root (doing a su because root has not password):
tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/md4
tune2fs -j /dev/md4
mount /dev/md4 /shares/internal
It will fix the problem with journal (I hope it).
That solved MY problem.
Thanks and sorry for my very bad english, but I'm only trying to help others.

Wot do u do when you are offline and 3/4 full of data and already got mionet on computer xp x64 and cannot access data thru mybookworld because it doesn't recognise my mionet password or is there someother password required?

This product is a disgrace. First, because the notion that no-one would want to store more than 1000 files in a directory or subdirectory on a 1TB drive is bizarre. Second because MioNet won't work with Vista x64 which is bundled on all new high end computers. Third because MioNet is infuriating even when used from a PC running Windows XP Pro x86. Like many others around the world, I have found that MioNet in Manage mode just reports the drive as OFFLINE and that's the last you will ever see of your drive or data written with MioNet directories. You can get limited usage out of it with SAMBA access by using your browser to open \\MyBookWorld and running the bult-in drive management utility, BUT and it is a critical BUT, the drive will still not work with most backup software, even though network attached storage is what most home users want to use for backup.
So, in short, unless you just want to use this drive for shared storage of unimportant files on a home network and don't need it for backup purposes, go ahead and use it but don't install MioNet whatever you do - only use the native utility at \\MyBookWorld!!

I have come across lots of problems with the WD MyBook range. The bulk of problems are caused by WD being lazy and not informing thier customers properly.
When you buy a WD MyBook it comes pre-formatted by an Apple Mac so both Windows and Mac workstations are supposed to be able to access it.
The reality is that if you are using it on a Windows PC after a while it will start playing up and doing weird things (like sometimes showing up/sometimes not).
What you are supposed to do if you are using a Windows PC (which WD recommend but forgets to tell you on any MyBook packaging/docs) is to do a full format before ever using it.
***If you havent done so and already have data on the MyBook, this will be erased if you format without backing this data up beforehand.***
After formatting it you need to ensure that you always remove the device safely before unplugging it. This is an irritating Windows design flaw, where if you don't remove the device safely it could corrupt the data on part of the drive and it might never be recognised by your PC again.
So I suppose what I'm trying to tell you is if you have any valuable data, like family photos and things that can't be replaced , that you think is safe by saving it on your MyBook. Don't! The same goes for any media, especially USB HDD's. The only thing you can do is do multiple backups, don't just save them in one place. Save you valuable data on cd's and store them somewhere safe.
That being said, WD MyBooks are great value for money and on the whole a good product. As long as you look after it and treat it well it should last you a long time.
I hope this helps you if problems arrise again.

I had the same problem. After contacting e-mail support at WD they suggested an exchange under warranty. The replacement unit was 50% bigger (750gb) and it has worked perfectly from the day it was switched on.
