i don't have dvd-rom icon under the file
"my computer" and the computer doesn't show any response to dvd/vcd. it happened when i was once watching dvd. i also checked data cable and electric supply. the secondary IDE also shows no device installed. please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have this exact problem, and i have tried everything that Vishal51 has said.
But when I installed a new dvd drive, my computer recognized the device, but the icon still doesn't show in My Computer, and there is still no response when I insert a dvd or cd.

Check:
1. if on pressing the eject button on the drive, the DVD loading arm comes out.
2. if yes, replug your IDE cable.
3. If it does not work try using another IDE cable.
4. If still the same problem, connect it to anothet IDE port.
5. If the problem is still there get your DVD drive checked.
I assume you have not fiddled with the jumper settings.
