Question about Lexmark X4270 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Scanner Problem Vertical lines appear down the lefthand side of the scanned picture or on any copied page. I suspect that they will also appear on any faxes. I think I know what the problem is but can I fix it or have the sensors for that section died?

I have found out the cause of the problem. On pulling the feed roller out I was able to see the lamp. On three small sections of the lamp was some gunk (technical term). Using a clean rag dampened with water I was able to rub off the gunk. After re-assembly it now scans perfectly. Thanks for everyones help.

See if this helps Power off the All-In-One (AIO) and remove the power supply from the back of the unit. Wait 30 seconds, then reinsert the power supply and power the AIO on. Did the error message return? Yes: Continue to step 2. No: Print a test page. If the test page prints, the error is resolved. 2 Power off the AIO and remove the power supply from the back of the unit. Open the top cover of the AIO. Using the carrier belt, gently move the cartridge carrier to the middle of the unit. 3 Remove both cartridges from the AIO. Close the top cover, reinsert the power supply, and power the All-In-One (AIO) on. Did the error message return? Yes: There is a hardware problem with the printer. Continue to Contacting Lexmark. No: Continue to Step 4. 4 Power off the AIO and remove the power supply from the back of the unit. Open the top cover of the AIO. Using the carrier belt, gently move the cartridge carrier to the middle of the unit. 5 Insert the color cartridge. Close the top cover, reinsert the power supply, and power the AIO on. Did the error message return? Yes: Continue to Cleaning the Cartridge Contacts, then repeat steps 4 and 5. If you have already tried cleaning the contacts, continue to Defective Cartridge Test. No: Continue to step 6. 6 Power off the AIO and remove the power supply from the back of the unit. Open the top cover of the AIO. Using the carrier belt, gently move the cartridge carrier to the middle of the unit. 7 Insert the black cartridge. Close the top cover, reinsert the power supply and power the AIO on. Did the error message return? Yes: Continue to Cleaning the Cartridge Contacts, then repeat steps 6 and 7. If you have already tried cleaning the contacts, skip to Defective Cartridge Test. Black vertical lines come and go for scans to computer and copies


I suspect the Document Feeder is not aligned properly and light is leaking in. You will need to have a technician in to check the alignment of the scanner to see if it needs to be readjusted. random black lines on edges usually indicate light leaking into the scan area.

I have a big black line down the middle of my scans


If dirt sticks to the scan module, it will be scanned continuously and appear as a line in the output. Clean the glass with Isopropyl Alcohol. Dont use any other solvent.

This article provides the self-diagnostic steps necessary to evaluate top-to-bottom streaks that appear when copying or scanning.

Important! This is seldom a scanner hardware failure.

The main reason for this anomaly is debris or marks on the scanner glass that is used for Auto document feeder (ADF) page scans.

Who should consider this article?

Any user of an MFP or All-In-One printer experiencing the following symptoms:

  • -Vertical lines only when using the Autodocument Feeder (ADF).
  • -Observed with any type of scan job (e-mail, ftp, solutions, fax).
  • -However, normal expected output when the page is scanned from the scanner flatbed.



ADF scan behavior

Think of it this way:

  • -The page is pulled from the ADF.
  • -The moving page slides across an ADF-designated portion of glass.
  • -The image sensor, which is located under the glass, reads and interprets the moving page's contents.
  • -Contamination on this ADF glass is seen by the image sensor for the entire length of the page.
  • -The image processor interprets the image sensor's repeated capture of this contamination as a vertical solid line.
  • -Any ADF scan function now exhibits a vertical line.

Suggested Diagnosis and Fix




Step Action 1 Locate the portion of the glass designated for ADF scans.
HINT: The glass location differs by model. This area is often separate from the scanner flatbed. Please reference User's Guide for more information if you are having a difficult time locating this designated area.
2 Perform a visual inspection for any of the following recurring culprits:

  • -Clear adhesive tape
  • -Glue
  • -Ink pen
  • -Paper
  • -Marker
  • -White out
  • -Staples
  • -Environmental dust or dirt
HINT: Ink marks can be especially hard to see and almost translucent at first sight. However, the image sensor (CCD) registers them as a mark. 3 Use a clean, soft, moistened cloth to thoroughly clean and remove any marks or debris. 4 Inspect the underbelly or underside of the ADF for any marks or debris. 5 Perform another scan to see if cleaning the glass alleviated the issue. 6 Repeat the procedure if a vertical line still appears.
Remember! Printing and scanning from the scanner flatbed work fine.
7 This time, place an intentional mark on a blank sheet of paper and take note of its location. Now place that sheet of paper in the ADF and make a copy.
8 Evaluate the distance of the vertical line to the your mark. 9 Inspect that area of the glass for further debris or marks and clean as necessary.

Colored lines on a copy page


To fix the colored lines on a copy page do the below steps

  1. Disconnect the power cord, wait five seconds, and then plug it back in. This will reinitialize the unit and force the scanner to calibrate again.
  2. Examine the scanner glass and white scan backing. Clean the scanner glass and scan backing if they are not clean. To clean the scanner glass and scan backing, use a soft cloth towel slightly dampened with clean water.
  3. With the product turned on, open the scanner cover and check the bulb assembly. If the scanner bulb is not lit, the unit must be serviced.
  4. Verify that the alignment page is placed on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (if equipped) correctly. Place the printed side down.
  5. Make a copy of the alignment page. The unit will make a copy even if the alignment message is displayed. Compare the copy to the original. If vertical lines appear in the copy, check to see if the scanner assembly requires cleaning. If cleaning the scanner assembly does not correct the problem, service the product.

Vertical line appears in scans using the ADF, but not with copies


happened to me after i fed a page with not-too-hard whiteout on it. the feeder makes the page run through a different piece of glass and i just had to clean it.

the problem is in the scanner, open it up and see if you can find any smudges, and clean any obstruction, any ink, liquid eraser residuals, can cause this part to appear as lines on your copied faxed image.
dont concentrate on the printer this is a scanner problem

Black vertical line (1 inch wide) appears while scanning/copying


For this kind of problem you need to call the tech support because the printer is already messed up and it is in need of replacement

Print Problem - vertical lines


If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.
