My range has been significantly reduced after installing the recent new firmware. I used to connect to Netgear 88 but now I have to use Netgear 88 5G. Is it the 5G or the new firmware?

Go back and reload the firmware if that solves it you are good to go if not revert back to factory firmware and then post a note on Netgears site, could be a bug in their firmware.

Try unplugging BOTH the repeater and the router, Then, plug the router back in and let it establish a connection. Then, plug the repeater in and let it reestablish the connection.
Does your IPAD or your computer show the Netgear88 as an available connection. If you are using windows 7 you should be able to look at your "network and sharing" page. Then click on "connect to a network" (2nd one down). When click on that another screen should open up showing which band your computer is connected to. It should also show the OTHER band as well. It will also show the signal strength for both the Netgear88 channel and the Netgear88 G channel. If that information is there and the signals are good then the problem is in your IPAD. You may need to check to see if it needs to be updated as well.
You may have
1) A low or bad battery.
2) Be holding the radio at an angle and reducing your range. Hold the antenna straight up, perpendicular to the ground, to achieve the best range. Height and placement of the antenna determines range.
3) Or you may be trying to talk in-or-out of a building, which would significantly reduce your range. Obstacles between you and the other radio, as well as the body fluid of a person wearing their radio low on their hip can significantly reduce range.
You may need to upgrade your Router Firmware. Try going to the Netgear site http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1297 and select your exact model. Version number is located on the sticker under the Router. Under the downloads section of your model, is a Firmware download. Download the latest version for installation. BE SURE that you connect your computer and router with a Network cable when upgrading the Firmware. DO NOT upgrade firmware over Wireless connection of you could fry the device. To login into the router console click http://192.168.0.1 and enter admin as the username, and password as the password. You will see an upgrade firmware section, point to the new Firmware file you have downloaded and follow the on screen prompts. You will need to setup your SSID and Encryption Password after the upgrade. Netgear Support will walk you through this these steps if you are uncomfortable performing them. Support numbers are here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/984
Try to open the Router page using "ROUTERLOGIN.COM" in IE and go to WAN Setup option in which u can see Disable SPI Firewall (check the box), also reduce the MTU Size to 1400 or 1390
I had just the same problem, when netgear upgraded the firmware it would no longer connect. To solve this i went onto netgear.com, click support, enter the model number, then download firmware 40.01.37. not the most recent one. Follow the online instuctions after installing the firmware you should have no problem with entering the password.
