Chances are that your battery doesn't / wouldn't hold a charge anymore. The laptop runs off battery power. When it is plugged in, the AC power "goes right through the battery", to support the laptop's operations. When the power cord is unplugged, and the battery doesn't hold a charge, the laptop will shut down, as your battery is (too) low to continue supporting the laptop's operations.

The easiest way around this problem is to get a new battery for the laptop.
If your battery is (quite) new (and a Lithium battery), you may wish to see if you can "revive" the battery's "life" ... first by depleting the battery (completely), then charging it (until it shows it is full, plus a couple more hours), and repeating this process a few times. If you're lucky, the battery will slowly/gradually start to hold some charge, but, don't expect it to be very long.
The (preferred) way to use re-chargeable batteries is to charge it fully, unplug it from the external power source, use it until it is depleted, then plug in the external power source to charge it up (fully) again .... and NOT to keep it on a power source all the time.

My laptop is not charging. i plug the power in but still doenst charge. im not sure if its on the power cords or on the laptop please help asap i need my laptop for school :(

Does the laptop work on AC ? Is the battery or cord/charged a replacement? First, try another cord/charger of the EXACT same specs as original. Second, Is the battery good? How old? Over 4 years? Have it tested. Beware of inexpensive aftermarket batteries and cord/chargers. I assume the laptop works on AC? If you unplug the AC , with battery in, the laptop shuts down immediately?

New battery HP g61 is fully charged but not working \

Maybe the AC Adapter Power Cord is not working. If you can't get on the laptop with the power cord then it is bad and the battery might be drained so you have no power source to power up the laptop.
If the laptop works only off the Power Cord and the batteryis not charging, then the battery is dead.

To check to make sure the Power Cord is working remove the battery and let thelatop run for 10 minutes or so.

To check to see if the battery has any charge left in it put the battery in andremove the power cord. If it won't boot or shuts down then the battery is deadand needs to be replaced if the power cord is ok.

Dell Inspiron 6000 powers up, caps lock flashes 9 times, then laptop shut down. Why???

Unplug power cord from laptop, remove battery from laptop. Open memory access panel on the bottom of the laptop. Remove memory module(s) (SO-DIMM). Plug power cord back into laptop. Turn laptop on (with the memory removed), the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs light, then the laptop shuts itself off. Unplug power cord from the laptop. Reinstall the memory modules. Make sure they are seated correctly. Put the battery back in, plug the laptop back in, and power on. Laptop should power on and boot up properly.
May need to hold the power button down to get it to power on properly.

My MSi A6200 laptop, decided it is not going to turn on anymore, even with the power cord attached. It will turn on for a few seconds and then immediately power off. What can I do to fix this?

I know this is an old question but for those who are looking for a solution i narrowed it down to the power button board above the keyboard. it seems that if you power the computer on and then quickly remove the board from the ribbon cable the computer will stay on.

Looks like your battery is having a problem. Remove the battery and replace after a couple of hours. If problem remains replace the battery with another to test, if this works, then the problem is with the adapter unit. Get a new one.

Laptop turns off intantly, when I unplug the charging cord

For those of you having the problem of a HP laptop shutting off when you unplug the charger and your battery is fully charged, I can help you. There is nothing wrong with the laptop, battery, or computer, it is a power management setting. If you go to display properties, select the screen saver tab, then click the "power" button, in the power schemes field is a drop down window, click on it and select "Rixane Power Scheme", it is a power switching utility that quickly switches between AC and Battery when the power cable/charger is plugged in or unplugged while the laptop is on. If you have it set to "always on" it will shut off when you pull the power cord, even if the battery is charged. This will also happen on many non-HP laptops, if you don't have a HP laptop or there is not a "Rixane" option available, select the "Portable/Laptop" power scheme. Hope this helps!
