Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop

1 Answer

Memory/Graphic problem My brother just bought an Acer Aspire 3680.He purchased 1 gig of DDR2 Memory from Crucial. We put the stick in and the graphic kept changing once booted up to just 8 bit. The screen is fine at first then the screen goes off and back on with 8 bit display. 512 came in the machine. Crucial site said he could mix memory sizes. I tried it with the 1 gig stick by itself in case the mixed memory was the problem. Same thing..I've tried 2 sticks of 512...same thing. I've tried 2 sticks of 1 gig each..same problem. This laptop won't allow any upgrade at all. Will only run correctly with (1) 512 stick. I've never seen this problem ever. I've installed many memory sticks in computers. This is a first for me. Could it be the memory banks are faulty? Any advice would be appreciated. BTW. the computer shows the upgrade amount of memory but the display keeps changing to 8 Bit!

Thank you for your advice. I did call Acer and they said he should return the laptop. They mentioned that the memory banks may be faulty. I've just never seen this before when i've installed memory. I'll check the bios before we ship it to Acer. Thanks again...*S*

    Found the solution.

Just wanted to pass this on to anyone else that may experience this problem installing memory. The Acer Empowering Technology installed on the system was the problem. I read on the Acer website how AET will control the desktop display so AET can run correctly. Acer recomends to removed some of the AET software if you don't have enough memory to run it. If you install memory and your colors revert to 8 bit and you can't change it back without AET taking over the desktop...only solution is to uninstall AET. This was the solution and now laptop runs great with Mem upgrade and no color change. Obviously Acer doesn't know it happens with ram upgrade sometimes so of course they had no clue. Uninstall Acer Empowering Technology Tools.

This might have something to do with DVMT or Digital Video Memory Technology. Basically, the amount of video memory is dependent on the amount of memory installed. I'm not very familiar with acer system BIOS but try to look for VIDEO under system BIOS and try to select any fixed video memory if possible. you can also try to disable DVMT.

Some motherboards are only upgradable to their allotted amount that board may only handle up to 2 gigs of RAM which is a shame. But this is the way it is. That is why I always check the board memory capacity before I buy computer boards or RAM for them. The beeps indicate error on the slots for the RAM that is why you can start up when you remove ram one at a time and replace. So use the allotted amount of RAM for that board specification or get another mother board that can handle more than 2 gigs of RAM. Sorry for the loss. Thanks for using FixYa! John

I can't get 3gig ram to boot in my Acer Aspire 3680 Notebook

Test the second stick of memory in the first slot. Confirm that the second stick is not a problem. If it works, then you have a bad slot on the motherboard. Oh, and one other thing--make sure the memory stick speeds are compatible. Match the memory speeds where possible. Post back your findings.

Memory upgrade for Acer Aspire 3680

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot so you can install modules one at a time, and you can mix different densities of modules in your computer. But if your computer supports dual-channel memory configurations, you should install in identical pairs (preferably in kits) for optimal performance How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS hope this helps pls appreciate by rating as fixyaa.thanks and Godbless.

Boot with over 2GB of ram

Make sure you got the right speed -

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200 or DDR2 PC2-5300.

If you got faster than 5300 they may not clock down properly.

If the memory is the correct specs then it may simply not be compatible and you will have to try different RAM.

I have the best luck on laptops with Crucial ram - they have certified ram for many systems. here is a link for yours:

RAM ON acer computers

Yes... just need to purchase the right stuff.

You need to determine if you have DDR or DDRII. And then determine if you have one stick of 512, or if you have 2 sticks of 256. Once you know this information, visit your local Best Buy or purchase somewhere online, a memory upgrade. Such as 2 sticks at 512mb for 1 gig total. Assuming you have two memory slots, should have anyway.

DDRII is fairly cheap right now, be a good time to upgrade. DDR on the other hand, is still a little more expensive.
